Dee, Wilson score goals for Cardinals, who overcome 2-0 deficit for their first draw of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind goals from Geoffrey Dee and Adam Wilson, the No. 6 University of Louisville men's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with Charlotte on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
After the visiting 49ers (3-1-1) claimed a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute, the Cardinals (4-1-1) answered with their first goal less than two minutes later before scoring the equalizer inside the opening minute of the second half. Louisville remained unbeaten at home (3-1-1) with Tuesday's result, which marked the second straight season the teams have played into overtime.
The 49ers struck for the first goal of the match in the sixth minute after Patrick Hogan connected on the second of his two attempts inside the box for the 1-0 lead. After Louisville's Jake Gelnovatch made the save on the initial attempt, Hogan tracked down the rebound before scoring inside the left post from six yards away for his first goal of the season.
Charlotte increased its advantage to 2-0 at the 36:33 mark when Ethan Sawdon delivered his first goal of the season. Tommy Madden and Maclean Holbrook were credited with assists on the goal.
The Cardinals cut the deficit in half less than two minutes later after Dee converted on a penalty kick at 37:57 in the match. The 49ers were whistled for a handball in the box setting up the penalty kick for the home side. The goal was the second of the season and the 11th career tally for Dee.
After going into halftime with a deficit, Louisville wasted little time drawing even as Wilson scored from 16 yards out just 52 seconds into the second half. Dee delivered a pass from the left side of the field across to Wilson, who curled a shot around two defenders and inside the far left post for his 10th career collegiate goal, including the second this season.
The teams battled for the final 44 minutes of regulation as well as a pair of 10-minute overtime periods before ending in the draw, which was the first for Louisville this season. The Cardinals closed the match with a 13-9 edge in shots, while shots on goal were even at 6-6. Louisville did not surrender a shot from Charlotte during the second half or the first overtime period.
Up next, the No. 6 Cardinals are back at home to host ACC foe Pittsburgh on Friday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
