Gelnovatch makes save on penalty kick before Wilson coverts penalty kick two minutes later for the winner
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jake Gelnovatch made a spectacular save on a penalty kick before Adam Wilson converted a penalty kick just two minutes later to lift the No. 6 University of Louisville men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The decisive exchange started in the 77th minute when the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick after the Cardinals where whistled for a foul inside the box. Javi Perez stepped up and took the kick for the road side but his right-footed attempt was turned away by Gelnovatch, who made the diving save to his left.
After the redshirt sophomore goalkeeper claimed the momentum for the home side, Louisville charged into the lead in the 79th minute when Wilson delivered the game-winner with his own penalty kick. After a foul on the Panthers inside the box, Wilson's left-footed strike caromed off the hands of Pittsburgh goalkeeper Johan Penaranda and into the goal for the clincher. It marked the 11th career collegiate goal for Wilson, including the third this season.
With the victory, Louisville remained atop the ACC Atlantic Division standings with a 3-0-0 mark while improving to 5-1-1 overall. Pittsburgh dropped to 3-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the ACC. The Cardinals improved to 5-0-0 all-time against the Panthers, including 3-0-0 at home.
Though penalty kicks proved to be the decisive plays in the match, Louisville dominated the possession in the match and finished with a 12-7 edge in shots, including a 5-2 advantage on goal. The Cardinals had a 9-4 margin in corner kicks. Gelnovatch needed just two saves to register the fourth shutout of the season for Louisville.
Up next, the No. 6 Cardinals kick off a three-match road stretch with a visit to Georgetown on Tuesday at 4 p.m., ET.
