Jennings’ Late Goal Lifts No. 6 Louisville Past Georgetown

First career goal for Jennings comes in 82nd minute with Cardinals playing one man down
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The first collegiate goal for Izaiah Jennings helped the No. 6 University of Louisville men's soccer team overcome a man-down disadvantage and earn a 2-1 road victory against Georgetown on Tuesday night at Cooper Field.
Playing 10-v-11 for the final 17 minutes of the match after Louka Masset was sent off with a red card following his second yellow of the match, the Cardinals (6-1-1) found the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute when Jennings corralled a loose ball deep in the attacking zone and scored. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from Barrington, Rhode Island, who extended Louisville's unbeaten streak to five straight matches.
"I'm so proud of our guys and how they battled to grind out a great win on the road against a very good opponent," said Ken Lolla, who registered his 150th win in 13 seasons as the head coach of the Cardinals. "We showed a lot of character tonight."
Senior Tate Schmitt added his 22nd career goal and the first this season for the Cardinals, who earned their first ever win over the Hoyas (5-3-1) in just the second meeting all-time between the programs. Originally scheduled to be played on the natural grass surface at Shaw Field, the match was moved to the artificial turf at Cooper Field due to excessive rainfall and wet field conditions.
The Cardinals struck first on Tuesday night after Schmitt connected on a header in the 30th minute for the 1-0 lead. The goal chance was setup by a well-placed corner kick by Adam Wilson, who registered his second assist of the season.
The Hoyas answered Louisville with their own first half goal in the 37th minute when Derek Dodson scored his fifth goal of the season. Riley Strassner and Dylan Nealis were credited with assists for the home side.
After Georgetown gained the man-advantage in the 72nd minute, Louisville withstood six shots and five corner kicks for the victory against the former Big East Conference foe. The Hoyas finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-6 edge on goal. GU also had a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.
Up next, the No. 6 Cardinals continue a three-match road stretch with a visit to No. 12 NC State on Friday at 7 p.m., ET.
