Schmitt scores equalizer with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation as Cardinals extend unbeaten streak to six matches
RALEIGH, N.C. - Tate Schmitt delivered the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation to help the No. 6 University of Louisville men's soccer team earn a 2-2 draw against No. 12 NC State on Friday night at Dail Soccer Field.
After the Wolfpack moved into the lead with a pair of goals in a span of a little more than 10 minutes in the second half, Schmitt scored the equalizer on a free kick with 51 seconds remaining. The Cardinals (6-1-2, 3-0-1 ACC) had the only three shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods while extending their unbeaten streak to six games overall.
"I am proud of our guys and how we battled to get a point out of the game at the end. We played well enough to take three points but allowed them to stay in the game by not finishing our chances," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "The first half was as dominate a half for us all season."
The pivotal goal from Schmitt was his 23rd career tally, including the second this season. The senior from Phoenix, Arizona ranks seventh in school history with his 23 goals while also ranking seventh in career points with 59.
The scoring started in Friday's match in the 27th minute when Cherif Dieye capped a great individual effort by scoring inside the far right post from 12 yards out for the 1-0 lead. The junior worked around multiple defenders and into space before scoring his 10th career goal, including the third this season.
The Cardinals carried their lead into halftime and through the first 30 minutes of the second half before NC State (6-2-1, 1-2-1 ACC) evened the score at 1-1 in the 76th minute. David Loera looped a pass into the box where Aidan Foster connected on a header for his second goal of the season.
Less than 11 minutes later, the Wolfpack gained their first lead of the night when Gabriel Machado fired a left-footed rocket inside the upper left corner from 25 yards out for the 2-1 advantage. Tanner Roberts and Brad Sweeney were credited with assists on the goal, which was the fourth of the season for Machado.
The home side appeared well on its way to the victory before being whistled for a foul in the final moments of the match. Schmitt took the free kick for the Cardinals sending a rocket over the wall of defenders, off the hands of goalkeeper Leon Krapf and into the goal from 22 yards out.
While neither side had any offensive threat in the first overtime period, the Cardinals had a trio of shots in the final five minutes of the second overtime period but were not able to find the clincher.
Louisville finished the match with an 11-4 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the No. 6 Cardinals conclude their three-match road stretch with a visit to No. 20 Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., ET.
