Dieye scores his second goal of the season as the Cardinals move to 4-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ACC
NEWTON, Mass. - Cherif Dieye scored the only goal of the night in the 80th minute to lift the No. 7 University of Louisville men's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory against Boston College on Friday night at Newton Campus Fields.
The Cardinals moved to 4-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ACC with their first road victory of the season. Friday's result marked the first loss of the season for the Eagles, who dropped to 2-1-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the ACC. Louisville improved to 4-0-1 all-time against Boston College.
With the two sides entrenched in a defensive contest, Dieye provided the clincher when he converted inside the far right post from 10 yards at the 79:44 mark in the match for his ninth career collegiate goal. Tate Schmitt earned his fourth assist of the season and the 13th of his career after finding Dieye open in space up the left side of the field.
"I'm proud of the guys' effort on a night when we weren't at our best," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "In difficult conditions, we found a way to win."
The lone goal proved to be enough for the Cardinals, who registered their second straight shutout and their third overall this season. Goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch needed just one save to earn his second shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.
Boston College closed the match with an 8-7 edge in shots, while each team finished with only one shot on goal. The Cardinals had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the No. 7 Cardinals return home to host Charlotte in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
