Cards will host fall tournament
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team announced their 2018-2019 season schedule. The schedule includes four fall tournaments to start the season, followed by the start of spring season in late January 2019.
Â
"Another very challenging schedule, that's definitely a function of the ACC but also the teams I chose to play out of conference as well," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "The ACC is the best tennis conference in the country, so you have to be very smart with all the matches you schedule out of conference. I think this year's team will make another jump as far as its level so I was confident in going on the road and playing a few more tough matches to get us better prepared for conference play. Playing Furman on the road, and the weekend we play Nebraska and Wichita State on the road will give us ACC level competition plus the opportunity to try and get quality wins out of conference which is something the NCAA selection committee looks at." Â
Louisville begins the fall season on the road at the Akron Invite in Akron, Ohio on Sept. 21-23. The Cardinals then continue on the road to Bloomington, Ind. For the Indiana Invite on Sept. 28-30. The fall road travel finishes in Chattanooga, Tenn. For the ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Oct. 11-15. Louisville finishes their fall season at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, hosting Marquette, West Virginia, and Miami (Ohio) for the Louisville Classic on Nov. 2-4.
Â
The Cardinals start the spring portion of their season at home, taking on Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Louisville continues their opening week with a Friday doubleheader on Jan. 25, taking on Ball State at 11 a.m. and Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m. The Cardinals finish their January homestand on Sunday, Jan. 27 when they take on Cincinnati at 3 p.m.
Â
Louisville then hits the road for three non-conference matchups, visiting Charleston Southern on Feb. 2, Furman on Feb. 3, and Marshall on Feb. 8. The Cardinals take part in two additional non-conference matchups this season, taking on Nebraska on Feb. 15 and Wichita State on Feb. 16, both on the road.
"Then you have the ACC Conference matches at home with Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Duke, Wake Forest and Boston College all coming to Bass-Rudd, it's a really tough slate but something we need to take advantage of," said Beckham. "I believe at minimum five or six of those teams will be nationally ranked and playing in the NCAA Tournament and I think Duke could be a top 3 ranked team in the nation when they come and play us. Then we have North Carolina, Florida State, Miami and Virginia on the road who are all going to be top 20 teams this season. The level of competition is pretty crazy but we are going to look at it as an opportunity every match we play. It should be a lot of fun!"
Â
Feb. 10 marks the first conference matchup of the season for the Cardinals, as Pittsburgh travels to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for a 12 p.m. match. The Cardinals then continue ACC play at home on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. against Syracuse, followed by Feb. 24 against Clemson at 12 p.m. The Cardinals finish their home conference matches from Mar. 10-31, hosting 2018 NCAA semi-finalists Georgia Tech and Duke, Wake Forest, and Boston College.
Â
The Cardinals face ACC opponents on the road for the first time on Mar. 1 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on North Carolina State. Louisville continues on the road on Mar. 3 and Mar. 8, taking on defending ACC Champion North Carolina and Notre Dame. The Cardinals finish their regular season on a road stretch from Apr. 5-13, visiting Virginia Tech, Virginia, Miami, and Florida State. The conference season culminates in the ACC Tournament held in Cary, N.C. from Apr. 17-21.
