Hensley notches her third straight win in the circle, Melton collects three RBIs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Megan Hensley tossed a complete game shutout and picked up her third straight win and Sidney Melton drove in three runs to help lead University of Louisville softball team to an 8-0 win over Boston College and complete an ACC series sweep Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals (31-17, 10-10 ACC) will return to action Wednesday when they play host to Marshall in their home finale.
Â
"Meg threw well for us right off the bat and our kids got out there offensively and got the job done, and that's huge for us, said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "My hat's off to Megan Hensley and what she did this weekend for us on the mound. That was tough. And then again, the defense behind her and just the offense, pure offense, we really got it done against a good Boston College team."
Â
The Cards struck early with two runs in the first. Hensley connected on a two-out double and scored on a hit by senior Jenna Jordan. Senior Nicole Pufahl's singled to bring Jordan home and make the score 2-0.
Â
Louisville added another run in the second when senior Alison Szydlowski reached on an infield hit and stole second to move into scoring position for junior Sidney Melton who delivered an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
The fourth inning brought three more Louisville runs. Sophomore Celene Funke got the home half of the frame started with a bunt single and moved to second on freshman Kyra Snyder's sacrifice bunt. Junior Blaire Bass walked and Melton singled to load the bases. Maddy Newman reached in an infield hit to plate Funke. Hensley followed with a two-run single, bringing the score to 6-0.
Â
The Cardinals' offense continued with a two-run fifth inning. Pufahl led off with a walk and Funke followed by smashing an RBI triple off of centerfield fence. Szydlowski reached on a bunt single and Bass was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Melton who earned a walk to bring home the final run for the 8-0 win.
Â
Boston College (26-21, 11-9 ACC) had a chance to score in the fourth when Carly Severini delivered one-out single and was safe at second on an error when Allyson Moore reached on a fielder's choice. Olivia Markopoulos was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Hensley got Lexi DiEmmanuele to pop up to Melton at shortstop to get out of the jam.
