Megan Hensley's two homers produced all of Louisville's runs to back her effort in the circle
Junior Megan Hensley used two homers to drive in all four of the Cardinals' runs and picked up the win in the circle to lift the University of Louisville softball team to a 4-2 win over Boston College in the opening game of an ACC series Friday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
The Cards (29-17, 8-10 ACC) will honor seniors Jenna Jordan, Ashley Nikolao, Nicole Pufahl, Jamie Soles and Alison Szydlowski prior to Saturday's 1 p.m. game against the Eagles.
Â
"My hat's off to Megan Hensley, she did it all today," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "She was great on the mound, but you've got to look at what she did offensively – two home runs, four RBIs – that's a great day. Overall we had great execution from our offense and great defense."
Â
Hensley (13-7) surrendered one earned run and scattered three hits in 6.1 innings of work while striking out five. Her two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored paced the Cardinals as they outhit the Eagles 6-4 in the contest.
Â
Boston College(26-19, 11-7) struck first with a run in the third. Lexi DiEmmanuele drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on Chloe Sharabba's base hit. Annie Murphy's groundout plated DiEmmanuele to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Â
Louisville countered when Hensley she led off the bottom of the fourth by launching a shot over the fence in left centerfield to even the score at 1-1.
Â
BC regained the lead with a run in the fifth. Freshman Danielle Watson entered the game in relief of Hensley and retired the first batter she faced with a called strikeout. DiEmmanuele then delivered a one-out single. Murphy was hit by a pitch and Emme Martinez drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Hensley re-entered to face CC Cook whose infield hit fell just outside of catcher Jenna Jordan's reach to bring home DiEmmanuele and put the Eagles back on top 2-1. Hensley went on to deliver a bases-loaded strikeout to get out of the jam.
Â
The Cards answered behind Hensley's second homer of the game in the home half of the fifth. Sophomore Caitlin Ferguson earned a leadoff walk and junior Sidney Melton beat the throw on an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Maddy Newman, Hensley stepped up to the plate and smashed a shot over the fence in right centerfield for her team-best eighth home run of the season.
Â
Allyson Frei (10-10) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on six hits and striking out three in 4.1 innings. Four different players registered hits for the Eagles.
