Junior righthanded pitcher ranks 12th in the nation with his 10 saves
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior righthanded pitcher Sam Bordner was named Thursday to the midseason watch list for the 14th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award.
Bordner was among 41 players on the watch list for the award given annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The Stopper of the Year Award is a familiar honor for Louisville, which has produced two winners in the first 13 years of the award – righthander Nick Burdi in 2014 and righty Lincoln Henzman in 2017.
A native of Baltimore, Ohio, Bordner enters the weekend ranked 12th in the nation with his 10 saves to go with a 1-2 record, 3.38 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 18.2 innings and 17 total appearances this season. Last season, Bordner earned his first career All-America honor (NCBWA Third Team) after registering a 0.41 ERA, 2-0 record, three saves and 39 strikeouts in 43.2 innings and 23 total appearances as a sophomore.
The No. 24 Louisville baseball team opens a three-game weekend series against Indiana State on Friday at 6 p.m., ET with the annual Patriotic Game at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals and Sycamores are also scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
