Seminoles break through with a four-run fifth inning
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A four-run fifth inning lifted No. 8/10 Florida State to a 4-0 win over the University of Louisville softball in the first game of an ACC series at Florida State's JoAnne Graf Field. The Cardinals (28-15, 7-8 ACC) and the Seminoles (37-8, 14-2) will face off again Sunday at 11 am.
Â
The teams played through four and a half scoreless innings before Florida State broke through with four runs in the fifth. Carsyn Gordon drew a two-out walk and stole second to set up Sydney Sherrill's RBI single. Back-to-back homers by Jessie Warren and Zoe Casas gave the Seminoles a 4-0 lead.
Â
Megan Hensley (12-6) took the loss, after giving up four earned runs on five hits and striking out four in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman Kyra Snyder held the Seminoles scoreless and did not allow a hit while striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief.
Â
Senior Jenna Jordan connected on a double and freshman Maddy Newman singled and walked to pace the Cards offensively.
Â
Kylee Hanson (22-3) picked up the win holding Louisville scoreless on two hits and striking out six in 6.0 innings of work. Five different players had a hit for the Seminoles.
Â
"I thought Megan Hensley did a nice job overall," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I think we did some very good things defensively and we put the ball in play and had our chances offensively, we just couldn't capitalize on anything. Credit to a very good Florida State team."
