Seven-Run Seventh Inning Propels Softball Past Indiana 11-7

Cards build an early lead and score seven runs in the seventh inning beat Indiana 11-7
Junior Sidney Melton drove in three runs while sophomore Celene Funke went 3-for-5 with two runs, senior Jenna Jordan went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI and junior Blaire Bass had two hits, scored two runs and collected three RBIs to help Louisville outhit Indiana 14-6. Freshman Danielle Watson (14-7) picked up the win after giving up two earned runs on two hits and striking out two in 3.0 innings of relief. Fellow freshman Kyra Snyder got the start in the circle, holding the Hoosiers scoreless in two innings while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The teams played through two scoreless innings before Louisville broke through with a run in the top of the third. Melton reached on an error to start the frame and
walks to Maddy Newman and Hensley loaded the bases for senior Nicole Pufahl's sacrifice fly to bring Melton home.
The Cards used three hits and a wild pitch to plate three more runs in the fourth. Jordan got the inning started with a double and moved to third on Funke's base hit. Bass was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Riley Schindler, who had entered to run for Jordan, crossed the plate on wild pitch. Melton's two-run single
gave Louisville a 4-0 lead.
The Hoosiers (18-25) answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth. Taylor Uden drew a leadoff walk and Rebecca Blitz delivered a single. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Maddie Westmoreland's two-run single cut the lead in half.
Indiana scored again in the sixth to pull within a run. Katie Lacefield and Rachel O'Malley drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Both runners moved on Sarah Galovich's sacrifice bunt to bring up Bella Norton who delivered an RBI bunt single, making the score 4-3.
The Cards exploded for seven runs while capitalizing on nine hits and two errors in the seventh. Jordan got the offense started with a single and Funke's double placed runners in scoring position for Bass who connected on a two-run double. After a hit by sophomore Caitlin Ferguson, an error sent Bass home to increase the lead to 7-3. Megan Hensley's two-run single plated Ferguson and senior Alison Szydlowski who had reached on a fielder's choice. Pufahl and Jordan delivered RBI hits to bring the score to 11-3.
The bottom of the seventh inning brought four more runs for the Hoosiers who began the rally with back-to-back singles from Rebecca Blitz and Gabbi Jenkins. A walk to Lacefield loaded the bases for O'Malley who earned a second straight walk to bring home Blitz. One out later, Norton cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run double to bring the score to 11-7. Hensley delivered her third strikeout of the inning and fourth of the contest to end the game and pick up her third save of the season.
Tara Trainer (11-14) took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits and striking out four in three innings. Norton paced the Hoosiers offensively with a 2-for-4, four RBI showing at the plate.
