Campbell drives in two runs, Rumoro and Dunn each homer for Louisville in Thursdayās loss
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No.10 Louisville baseball team suffered a 9-4 series-opening road loss to No. 5 Florida State on Thursday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Cardinals (18-7, 4-6 ACC) had a pair of two-run leads early before the Seminoles (21-6, 6-4 ACC) claimed control with back-to-back big innings in the second and third. Facing a 3-1 deficit, FSU used a four-run second inning to gain command for good before adding to the margin with a three-run third inning.
Sophomore Drew Campbell connected on a two-run single for Louisville while junior Pat Rumoro and freshman Lucas Dunn added their first collegiate home runs with solo shots. On the mound, junior righthander Liam Jenkins twirled two innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts and senior lefty Rabon Martin had three strikeouts without allowing an earned run in 2.2 innings of relief.
The Cardinals opened the scoring with the two-out, two-run single in the top of the first inning from Campbell. Junior Josh Stowers was hit by a pitch and junior Devin Mann walked before a balk from righty Cole Sands advanced both runners. Campbell followed the balk by sending a 2-2 pitch into right center for the 2-0 lead.
After the Seminoles answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning on Jackson Lueck's RBI single to left field, Louisville pushed the margin to 3-1 in the top of the second inning on Rumoro's home run. The catcher turned around a 2-2 pitch from Sands sending it over the left field wall.
FSU claimed its first lead of the game scoring four runs in the second inning, including two unearned runs. Mike Salvatore drove in the first run of the inning with RBI sacrifice fly to right field and Lueck followed with a RBI double down the left field line. Later in the inning, a two-out throwing error by the Cardinals allowed two additional runs to score giving the Seminoles a 5-3 advantage.
The home side added to the lead with a three-run third inning. Salvatore provided a RBI bunt single for the first run before back-to-back bases loaded walks later in the inning extended the margin to 8-3. An unearned run in the fifth inning added to the FSU lead. The final run of the night came with two outs in the ninth inning after Dunn sent a 2-2 offering over the left field wall for his collegiate four-bagger.
The Cardinals and Seminoles will continue the series on Friday at 6 p.m., ET, while the weekend finale is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
