Chad Ignites Rally as Women's Lacrosse Downs Mercer, 21-14
March 14, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
Tessa Chad finished with a season-high six goals, all of which came in the first half.
MACON, Ga. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse rallied back from a slow start to win 21-14 at Mercer on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Louisville improves to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in road games.
"We didn't come out of the gate like we need to, but they responded after we challenged them in a timeout. We went on a pretty good run and scored some goals there, but it shouldn't take that," said head coach Scott Teeter.
Just a little over 10 minutes into the game, the Cardinals found themselves in a 7-1 hole. That's when Tessa Chad reeled off two goals in a minute of action to ignite a rally that saw UofLÂ score the final 11 goals of the half to go into the locker room with a 12-7 lead.
The Cards then scored the first three goals of the second half to build a 15-7 lead as they cruised to a 21-14 win.
After giving up seven goals early, the defense locked down Mercer the rest of way as they held them scoreless for nearly 21 minutes.
Chad led the way with a season-high six goals, all of which came in the first half. In fact, she scored six of the Cards' first 10 goals. It marked her fifth hat trick of the season and she now ranks second to Caroline Blalock in goals scored with 26.
"That was just Tessa leading by example, just taking the game over by herself," added Teeter. "I thought there were quite a few of the seniors that stepped up, as well. Their play, their ability to demand the ball really elevated our team during that stretch, which was great."Â
Blalock and Ally Hall added four goals for Louisville, while Madison Hoover finished with three. Julia Wood and Jillian Balog had two goals each. Blalock also finished with three of the Cards' four assists on the game.
Lexie Ball had 11 saves and finished with a .440 save percentage.
The Cardinals return to ACC play on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. ET when they host Boston College.
