
Cards Break ACC Record on Day One of NCAA Championships

Sophie Cattermole, Mallory Comerford, Arina Openysheva, and Rachael Bradford-Feldman broke the ACC record in the 800 free relay.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team sits in sixth place after the opening night of competition at the Women's NCAA Championships following their record-breaking performance in the 800 freestyle relay.
"This is what we prepare for, to come and do our very best in March," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "We got a new school record, a new ACC record, and we're very proud of the effort tonight. Our performance tonight sets us up nicely for the rest of the meet."
In the sole event of the evening, the Cards' 800 free relay team of Sophie Cattermole (1:44.36), Mallory Comerford (1:39.14), Arina Openysheva (1:44.41), and Rachael Bradford-Feldman (1:45.84) combined for a time of 6:53.75, smashing the previous school record by nearly three seconds and finishing sixth to tie Louisville's highest NCAA finish in program history. The Cards also broke the previous ACC record in the event, eclipsing Virginia's mark of 6:55.25 from 2016.
Comerford's 1:39.14 split on the second leg of the relay was the fastest 200 freestyle split of all time.
Tomorrow's event lineup includes the 200-free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400-medley relay, and 1-meter diving. Prelims are slated to begin at 10 a.m. ET with the finals commencing at 6 p.m. ET.
