The Cards sit sixth after two days of competition.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team set two school records on the second night of competition at the Women's NCAA Championships. After seven events, the Cardinals are in sixth place with 99 points.
"This team has a lot of fight," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "That's what I love about this team. It doesn't always have to be pretty, but you just have to get the job done at NCAAs. We were able to put an exclamation point on the day with a record in the 400 medley relay. The old record-holding relay team had two National Team members, so to be able to break that record speaks volumes about this group."
The 200 free relay team of Lainey Visscher (22.28), Mallory Comerford (21.04), Avery Braunecker (22.18), and Casey Fanz (21.69) started off the finals session for the Cards with a fifth place finish in a time of 1:27.19, the program's best NCAA finish in the 200 free relay in history.
Kicking off the individual finals swim for the Cards was Sophie Cattermole, who raced to a time of 4:39.06 in the 500 free, placing fourth in the B final and 12th overall. The junior also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.
In the 200 IM, Rachael Bradford-Feldman used a strong back half to break the previous school record by one hundredth of a second in a time of 1:55.67. She finished 13th overall, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors.
Lainey Visscher recorded the Cards' top individual finish of the evening, touching third in the B final of the 50 free with a time of 22.14 and garnering Honorable Mention All-American recognition.
The Cardinals' 400 medley relay team of Alina Kendzior (52.11), Mariia Astashkina (58.42), Grace Oglesby (50.66), and Mallory Comerford (45.74) took the top finish of the evening for Louisville, touching fourth in a school record-breaking time of 3:26.93. Mallory Comerford's anchor split was once again the fastest among all swimmers in the field.
Each of the Cardinals' relay teams earned All-American honors.
Tomorrow's events include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay, and 3-meter dive. Due to the ESPNU's televised coverage of tomorrow night's finals, the prelims will begin at 9 a.m. with finals kicking off at 5 p.m.
