Men's Swimming Sits In Second After Day 3 Finals at the ACC Championships

The Cardinals won a gold, four silvers and a bronze during the finals on Day 3 of the 2018 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night in the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

NC State remains in first place with 1020 points, followed by Louisville (802.5), Notre Dame (624), Virginia (598.5), Florida State (583.5), Virginia Tech (484.5), North Carolina (451), Duke (418), Georgia Tech (276), Pitt (231), Boston College (102) and Miami (34).

Nick Albiero took the bronze in the 100 fly, making the podium with a time of 45.60, just under an A-cut. Zach Harting was sixth in the A-final with a 46.03. Nikkos Sofianidis was sixth in the B-final with a time of 46.84.  NC State's  Ryan Held won with a time of 44.96 for the second fastest in the NCAA .

In the 400 IM, Cardinal Etay Gurevich set a new school record with a 3:41.30 and earned silver. Gurevich surged to an early lead, before Brendan Casey caught him on the backstroke leg, and built almost a two second lead at the halfway point. Gurevich answered the challenge and outsplit Casey by more than three seconds — 29.77 to 32.90 — on the first 50 of breaststroke. Meanwhile, NC State Anton Ipsen surged to the front for gold with a time of 3:40.48. Seven of the eight men in the final were under last year's NCAA invite time of 3:44.92.

Sam Steele was the top finisher for the Cardinals in the A-final of the 200 free, touching 6th with a time of 1:35.12. Teammate Andrej Barna was 8th with a time of 1:36.36. Marcelo Acosta was second in the B-final with a 1:35.32. Â The event was won by NC State's Justin Tess, who turned in a 1:32.66 for gold. Virginia's Luke Georgiadis was silver with a time of 1:33.78.

Seeded third going into the A-final, Evgenii Somov took gold with a time of 52.18 for the Cardinals. Teammate Carlos Claverie won silver with a time of 52.69.  Evgenii Somov and Carlos Claverie were tied with a split of 24.64 at the first 50 mark, but the Somov beat his teammate by almost half a second down the stretch for the win.  Claverie matched his time from prelims this morning. Somov's time ranks him sixth in the NCAA this season.

Swimming his second of his three events of the evening, Nicolas Albiero was back on the podium with a silver medal finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 45.44. Coleman Stewart won the event with a time of 44.54, which moves him up to 5th all-time in the event and sets a conference and meet record. Louisville's Nikkos Sofianidis was second in the B-final with a time of 46.78.

In the final event of the evening, Louisville won silver in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:05.55 put up by  Nicolas Albiero (45.42), Evgenii Somov (51.92), Nikkos Sofianidis (46.53) and Andrej Barna (41.68). In first after the first two legs, the Wolfpack caught up and the Cards fell to third before Barna outran Virginia's Ryan Baker on the anchor for second. NC State won with a time 3:04.24.

Tomorrow is the final day of racing at the Championships with the 1650 freestyle, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly, and the 400 freestyle relay.
