Bio
Junior: Following up a successful Rio 2016 Olympics campaign, Carlos qualified for the 2017 World Championships, placing 19th in the 200-meter breast (2:11.71), 28th in the 100-meter breast (1:00.83), and 39th in the 50-meter breast (28.28) for Venezuela. For the Cardinals, Carlos qualified for his third consecutive NCAA Championships, finishing fifth in the 200 breast (1:52.8) and 13th in the 100 breast (52.39). He also swam the breaststroke legs in the school record-breaking fifth place 400 medley relay and the eighth place 200 medley relay at NCAAs. At the ACC Championships, he took the bronze medal in both the 100 (52.05) and 200 breast (1:53.19), while also helping the Cardinals to a gold medal in the 400 medley relay, splitting a 51.88 on the breaststroke leg. Additionally, he was a member of the 200 medley relay team at ACCs that broke the school record and took home the silver medal. During the dual meet season, Carlos swept both his individual events and the relays on four separate occasions against Notre Dame, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Kentucky. At the UofL Invitational, he placed first in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM. Carlos also competed in the Mesa, Santa Clara, and Atlanta Arena Pro Swim Series meets. Highlights include a third place finish in the 100-meter breast (1:01.38) and fourth places in the 200-meter IM (2:04.26) and 200-meter breast (2:11.92) at Mesa.
Sophomore: Carlos Claverie is one of three returning Louisville Olympians. The Venezuelan posted a 2:11.56 in the semifinals of the men's 200-breaststroke at the 2015 Rio Olympic Games to finish 15th. At the NCAAs, he made the A-final in both the 100-breast where he finished fourth in 51.97 and the 200-breast, where he was 6th with a 1:53.55. He won bronze with the 400-medley relay (3:04.73) with a split of 51.62. In the 200-medley relay, he helped the Cards to a fifth place finish of 1:24.08 with his split of 23.67. At ACCs, he scored 78 points and made the podium four times. He helped the 200-medley relay team to a 1:24.01 with a split of 23.55. He finished sixth in the 200-IM, with a 1:44.72. He won bronze in the 100-breast with a 52.41. He was on the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:04.90) splitting 51.97 and won another bronze in the 200-breast with a 1:53.77. At the Arena Pro Series in Indy, he finaled in the 100-meter breast (1:01.64) for fourth and won a silver in the 200-meter breast with a 2:04.68. He also finished ninth in the 200-meter IM. At the South American Championships, he won the 100-meter breast with a 1:00.82. He was fifth in the 50-meter breast (28.18) and then won gold in the 200-breast with a time of 2:10.44. In the 4x100 medley, he won another gold with a split of 59.87, en route to a 3:36.88. In the dual meet season, he was formidable in both breaststroke events. He won in the 100-breast against Xavier, Cincinnati, Kentucky and the UofL Invitational. In the 200-breast, he was first against Xavier, Cincinnati, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida State, Kentucky, Indiana and he won the UofL Invitational. He was named to the All-ACC Academic team, He was All-ACC in three different events.
Freshman: Carlos made a lot of noise on the Cardinal swim scene during his freshman campaign, earning All-ACC honors. At the ACC Championships, he scored 53 points highlighted by a bronze medal in the 200-breast where he went 1:54.80. He made the B-final in the 400-IM and placed 10th with a 3:47.97 and was in the C-final in the 100-breast (53.96). At the NCAA Championships, he competed in the 200-IM (1:45.50), the 100-breast (53.42) and the 200-breast (1:54.07). Swimming for Venezuela, at the Pan Am games, he won the B-final in the 100-breast (1:02.46) and was sixth in the 200-breast, going 2:13.22. In Kazan at the World Championships, he competed in the 100-meter breast (1:01.63), and the 200-meter breast (2:12.33) At the Arena Pro Series in Mesa, he won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:02.42 and then earned another gold in the 200-breast with a 2:14.31. He was fourth in the 400-meter IM (4:28.31) and sixth in the 200-IM (2:05.45). At the Arena Pro Series in Charlotte, he was 8th in the 100-meter breast (1:02.18) and 13th in the 400-meter IM (4:30.28) and had his best outing with a fifth in the 200-meter breaststroke. At the USA Short Course Nationals, his best finish came with a third place in the 200-breast when he went 1:54.96. He was also 12th in the 200-IM, 10th in the 400-IM, Highlights of the dual season include a win in the 200-breast versus North Carolina where he also was second in the 400-IM. Against archrival Kentucky, he won the 200-breast and was second in the 100-breast and 200-IM.
Prep: Carlos comes to the Cardinals from Caracas, Venezuela where he swam club for Coach Manuel Mann for Sport Center Los Naranjas. Carlos was a triple medalist at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014. Carlos was also the South American champion as well as the Central American champion. He also qualified for the Barcelona 2013 World Championships. He holds the Venezuelan national record in the 200-breast.
