Men's Swimming Finishes Second at ACC Championships

Cards win two gold and two bronze medals on the final day.
The University of Louisville won two gold and three bronze medals and finished as the runnerup in the final day of competition at the 2018 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.Â

NC State took the top honor with a 1,457 followed by Louisville (1,170.5), Virginia (983.5), Notre (Dame (941), Florida State (828.5), Virginia Tech (688.5), Duke (621), North Carolina (568), Georgia Tech (504), Pitt (324), Boston College (137) and Miami (94).

In the 1650 freestyle, Marcelo Acosta won bronze with a time of 14:41.21. NC State's Anton Ipsen established an early lead and had almost a 25 yard lead by the 1000 mark.  Acosta was in his wake in second with Notre Dame's Zach Yeadon in third.  Ipsen pulled away from the field and finished with a new conference and meet record of 14:31. Yeadon caught Acosta on the back half, to win silver in 14:34.60.  Acosta, last year's gold medallist, finished 3rd in 14:41.21.

In the 200 back, Nikkos Sofianidis was the top finisher for the Cardinals when he touched fifth in the A-final with a time of 1:41.86. NC State's Coleman Stewart had an NCAA A-cut time of 1:39.56 for gold, and completed the backstroke sweep after winning the 100 yesterday. Notre Dame's Robert Whitacre won silver with a 1:40.31 and Hennessey Stuart won bronze with a 1:40.82. Â Daniel Sos was fifth in the B-final with a 1:43.09.Â

In the 100 freestyle, Andrej Barna was the top finisher for Louisville when he touched sixth in the 100 free with a time of 42.82. Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held of NC State took gold with a new ACC and meet record time of 41.41 for an NCAA A cut. Justin Ress took silver with a 41.86 and Jacob Molacek made it a Wolfpack sweep with a 41.89.

In the 200 breast, Evgenii Somov took the gold and made it a breaststroke sweep with a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:53.05. Somov had to chase down Georgia Tech's Caio Pumputis, who took silver with a 1:53.45. Claverie touched third with a time of 1:53.62.  Jonathan Zoucha touched 8th in the B-final with a time of 1:58.51. In the C-final of the 200 breast, Todd Owen was 7th with a 1:59.81.

Nicolas Albiero set an ACC meet record and pool record and added a National Age Group record with his A-cut gold medal time of 1:41.08. Â NC State's Andreas Vazaios won silver with a time of 1:41.35 and Virginia's Ted Schubert tied Vaszios for silver . Zach Harting touched fourth with a time of 1:41.54.

In the final event of the four day event, UofL won bronze in the 400 free relay with a 2:51.09 put up by Nick Albiero (43.04), Andrej Barna (42.20), Evgenii Somov (43.41) and Zach Harting (42.44). NC State set an American Record with a gold medal swim of 2:45.69. FSU won silver, going 2:50.63.
