Wolf Leads No. 13 Louisville in Series-Opening Shutout

Junior lefty pitches seven scoreless innings as Cardinals cruise to 11-0 win over Youngstown State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior lefthander Adam Wolf twirled seven scoreless innings to anchor the first shutout of the season for the 13th-ranked Louisville baseball team in Friday's 11-0 series-opening victory against Youngstown State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
A native of Milan, Ohio, Wolf registered six strikeouts and allowed just two hits without issuing a walk in a career-long outing to win his second straight start and move to 2-0 on the season. The 6-6 southpaw retired the final 17 batters he faced while extending his career-long scoreless streak to 20.0 innings dating back to last season. In two starts in 2018, Wolf has accumulated 13 strikeouts with just two walks without allowing a run in 12.0 innings.
Following the dominant start from Wolf, sophomore lefty Stewart Currie worked a scoreless eighth inning in collegiate debut while freshman lefthander Gavin Sullivan pitched a perfect ninth inning to complete the shutout for Louisville, which moved to 5-0 on the season. The Penguins (1-3) totaled just three hits in Friday's game, the fewest allowed by the Cardinals since limiting Notre Dame to only one hit on May 5, 2017 in South Bend, Indiana.
At the plate, sophomore Justin Lavey connected on his first home run of the season delivering a two-run shot in Louisville's five-run third inning while also adding a walk and scoring a second run. Junior Josh Stowers tripled, walked, stole his third base of the season and drove in three runs and sophomore Tyler Fitzgerald singled, walked, drove in two runs and scored once. Sophomore Logan Wyatt was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, sophomore catcher Pat Rumoro finished 2-of-4 with two runs scored and sophomore Drew Campbell had two hits and scored once.
Louisville started quickly Friday plating eight runs in the first three innings, capped by the five-run third against Youngstown State righty starter Greg Dunham. Wyatt delivered a two-out RBI single in the first inning to score Stowers for the first run of the day. The Cardinals added to the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning on RBI groundballs from Stowers and sophomore Jake Snider.
The scoring continued in the third inning as Lavey followed a leadoff double from Logan Wyatt by sending the 0-2 offering from Dunham over the wall in left center for his second career home run. Fitzgerald added the third run of the inning on a RBI single to plate Campbell before a throwing error moments later allowed Rumoro to score. Stowers added a RBI sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.
The Cardinals maintained their eight-run cushion before adding their last three runs of the game in the seventh inning. Sophomore Ethan Stringer provided a run-scoring double and Fitzgerald added a RBI sac fly before Stowers drove home the final run with his RBI triple.
Up next, the No. 13 Cardinals and Penguins are slated to continue their series on Saturday at 1 p.m., ET while the weekend finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Each of the final two games of the series will be televised on ACC Network Extra, while radio coverage is slated for 93.9 The Ville.
