Men's Swimming Surges Into Second After Day 2 Finals at ACC Championships

Cards win four medals and break two school records.
The Cardinals won three individual medals and finished third in the 200 free relay in the second day of racing at the 2018 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

 The NC State Wolfpack has the lead after eight events with a score of 523. Louisville is second with 417, followed by Florida State (401.5), Notre Dame (377.5), Virginia Tech (346.5), Duke (297), Virginia (283), UNC (269), Pitt !153), Georgia Tech (138), Boston College (66) and Miami (34).

NC State senior, Anton Ipsen, virtually led wire to wire, touching in 4:11.21 for the gold medal in the 500 freestyle. Notre Dame freshman Zach Yeadon won silver with a time of  4:12.74, Marcelo Acosta won bronze, touching third a 4:13.70, setting a new school record.  Teammate Zach Harting threw down a 4:14.92 in the B final, a time fast enough to have been fourth in the A final. TC Smith was fourth in the B-final with a time of 4:19.80. Teammate Jarrett Jones was right behind him, touching fifth in the B-final  with a 4:19.87.  Louisville's Sam Steele finished third in the C-final with a time of 4:19.56.

NC State's Andreas Vazaios won the 200-IM with a 1:42.43 with Virginia Tech's Norbert Szabo taking silver with a 1:42.70 in a wild finish. Daniel Sos won bronze for the Cardinals in the 200-IM when he boarded a time of 1:43.86, dropping almost a full second from his morning swim. Etay Gurevich touched fifth in the A-final with a time of 1:44.18 and teammate Carlos Claverie was sixth in the A-final with a 1:45.42. Over in the B-final, Louisville's Evgenii Somov took third with a 1:45.02, Â Jonathan Zoucha turned in a 1:45.44 in the B-final and Keegan Foulke was fifth in the 200 IM C-final with a 1:46.71. Â Â

Olympic gold medallist Ryan Held of NC State won the 50 free 18.75. Fellow Wolfpack member Justin Ress was in hot pursuit, touching second with a 19.00. Andrej Barna scooped up a bronze when he put up a 19:16 in the A-final. Matyi Kovacs touches 8th in the B-final of the 50-free with a 19.96. Â Barna's qualifying time of 19:15 set a school record.

In the 200-free relay, the Cards set a new school record with a 1:17.26 set by  Andrej Barna (19.37), Nick Albiero (19.17), Matyi Kovacs (19.56) and Zach Harting (19.16). The event was won by the NC State foursome of Ryan Held, Justin Ress, Jacob Molacek and Coleman Stewart.

Tomorrow's prelims will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breast, the 100 backstroke with the 400 medley relay being contested as the last event of the finals.
