Cardinals give seniors a 3-0 win on Senior Day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Propelled by a dominant offensive performance, the University of Louisville women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Miami on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-2 in ACC play. Miami falls to 5-7-2 and 2-4 in the ACC.
Prior to the start of the match, the Cardinals recognized Gabrielle Vincent and Kennadi Carbin with a Senior Day celebration.
"I think we started off exactly the way we needed to, being aggressive both offensively and defensively," said UofL head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Certainly happy with that, and I think that afforded us an opportunity to get two goals. Then I think we did enough to close it out and get the third goal. Overall, three points, a shutout and we only gave up one shot, that's pretty awesome."
The Cardinals came out aggressive in the first half, controlling the pace on offense and looking for the early goal. The pressure paid off in the 14th minute as Brooklynn Rivers launched a corner kick into the box, finding Sarah Hernandez who headed in her first career goal and gave the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Looking to build on the momentum from the early goal, the Cards continued to attack on offense. Just over three minutes later, Emina Ekic delivered a cross into the box to Rivers, who found the back of net and extended Louisville's lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals had a number of close chances through the remainder of the half, but the Miami defense was able to keep Louisville from taking a three-goal lead into the break.
Louisville did not allow Miami to get off a single shot in the first half, edging the Hurricanes 11-0 and 5-0 in corners. Arianna Ferraro and Ekic led the Cardinals with two shots apiece.
Continuing their offensive dominance out of the break, the Cards quickly cushioned their lead just three minutes into the second half. Ekic sent a pass to Allison Whitfield, who fired a shot past the Miami keeper from 18-yards out to give Louisville a 3-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Searching for an answer, the Hurricanes increased their pressure on offense, but were unable to get past the Cardinal defenders. The Cards continued to control possession, almost converting on a number of scoring opportunities throughout the next 30 minutes of the half.
Delaney Snyder nearly stretched the Cards' lead to four in the 81st minute, but her shot sailed just wide of the goal in what would be the final chance of the match as the Cardinals secured the 3-0 victory over the Hurricanes.
Louisville finished with an 18-1 advantage in shots, while edging Miami 6-1 in corners.
Up next, the Cardinals head to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday for a matchup against Wake Forest. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.
