Louisville runner earns program's first ACC cross country title
BOSTON, Mass. – With a time of 20:08.1, Dorcas Wasike became the University of Louisville cross country team's first ACC champion Friday morning at the ACC Championships at Franklin Park. Setting a pace of 5:24 per mile, Wasike took first in the women's 6K race by eight seconds over Elly Henes of NC State, picking up her fourth victory of the season. She is the first Cardinal to earn a conference individual championship since Tyler Byrne won the American Athletic Conference men's meet in 2013.
"My hat goes off to Dorcas Wasike for picking up our first ever ACC individual cross country championship," said head coach Dale Cowper. "She was simply outstanding today and was able to hold off a strong field of contenders from NC State and Notre Dame."
For the first half of the race, Wasike remained behind Notre Dame's Anna Rohrer before making her push near the three-mile mark and separating herself from the field. She has now finished in the top 10 at the conference meet in all three seasons of her career and earned All-ACC honors for the third time.
Freshman Ivine Chemutai posted Louisville's second-best time at 45th place with a personal-best mark of 21:34.8, followed by junior Bailey Beery in 100th position at 22:26.7. In the overall standings, the Cardinals finished 14th with 324 points as NC State earned its third-consecutive title (67 points) by one point over Notre Dame.
In the men's 8K, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson earned All-ACC honors as he placed 15th with a time of 24:05.9. Sophomore Albert Kosgei was Louisville's No. 2 runner as he finished 39th with a time of 24:34.2 with senior Chandler Austin following close behind in 41st place at 24:35.1. In the overall standings, Virginia Tech's Peter Seufer took the individual title with a time of 23:30.9, while Notre Dame earned its first ACC team title with 57 points.
"Emmanuel led our men's squad to a significant improvement from last October and the future is bright for the squad," said Cowper. "We will continue to improve as the championship season moves to the 10,000-meter distance."
The Cards will now turn their attention to the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 9 at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. The 2018 season will then conclude with the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wisc.
