Louisville faces region's best in South Carolina
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by ACC women's champion Dorcas Wasike, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams head for the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Winthrop University Recreation Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.
The meet begins with the women's 6K race at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 10K race at noon. The top two individual finishers will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisc. The remaining advancing runners will receive at-large bids following the completion of regional races.
Two weeks ago, at the ACC Championships in Boston, Wasike became Louisville's first ACC champion with a winning 6K time of 20:08.1. In her fourth victory of the season, Wasike separated herself from the field near the three-mile mark and finished eight seconds ahead of NC State's Elly Henes, who will join her at the southeast regional.
Henes and the three-time ACC champion Wolfpack are the top-ranked squad in the race, joined by ACC rivals Virginia Tech, Duke and Wake Forest. At last year's regional in Charlottesville, the Cards placed fifth as Wasike earned All-Region honors for the second-consecutive season with a fourth-place time of 20:22.3.
In the men's race, the Louisville men will take on their first 10K course of the season. Freshman Emmanuel Cheboson earned All-ACC honors in Boston with a 15th-place time of 24:05.9 in the men's 8K, while sophomore Albert Kosgei and senior Chandler Austin posted top-50 finishes.
The Cards enter the regional ranked 11th in the team standings, with Eastern Kentucky holding the top spot. ACC squads dominate the regional rankings, with NC State, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina all sitting in the top 10. Last season, Louisville placed 18th in the regional, led by Daniel Fleace's career-best time of 30:57.2.
Live results from the regional championship will be available on Flash Results. Check GoCards.com for a full recap of the meet on Friday afternoon. For more updates and information, follow Louisville cross country on Twitter at @UofLTrackXC and on Facebook
