Volleyball Downs Weber State 3-1

Tess Clark had 15 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Weber State in the second match of the UNLV Challenge in Friday evening in Las Vegas.

UofL (4-3) hit .239 with seven aces and 10 blocks and got 16 kills and two aces from Melanie McHenry and 11 kills and .588 hitting from Jasmine Bennett. Molly Sauer had a match-high 18 digs. Cardinal setter Wilma Rivera had 52 assists, two aces and a match-high 52 digs. Weber State (1-7) was led by Andrea Hale's 12 kills and three blocks.

The Cardinals ran out to a 9-1 lead early in the first set and never trailed. UofL used .351 hitting powered by Tess Clark's four kills to overpower the Wildcats, who hit just .071. Â

UofL was up 7-2 early in the second set when Melanie McHenry killed an overpass for a kill.  Megan bounced one and put an end to a 3-0 Weber St. run to stay up 11-6. Weber State clawed its way back and with a 5-1 run to get within three at 15-12 . The Wildcats tied at 17 on a kill by Amanda Varley.  Weber State took the lead 20-18 and sparked a Louisville timeout to make adjustments. The Cards could not regroup and fell behind 24-21 in the second set. Jasmine Bennett killed ball  from the middle and Tess Clark ripped one off the block to come back 24-23. Weber State scored the last point to even the set score at one apiece going into the break. WSU had four blocks and hit .353 in that set.

After the break, the Cards trailed 7-4 early in the third set after UofL's seventh service error of the match. Cards called timeout when Weber State bombed a ball for a point and took a 9-4 lead. The Cards rallied and forced Weber State to call a timeout as UofL put up five points in a row, sparked by a Tess Clark kill and a block followed by a kill by Melanie McHenry. Two straight kills by Melanie McHenry tied the score at 13 before Louisville was able to take the lead at 17-16 on a net call, and a block on right side to force WSU to burn a timeout, Maggie DeJong and Tess Clark blocked Weber State to go up 24-18 in the third set before Tess Clark tipped one into the donut hole to give UofL the 25-19 win in the third.

The score was tied at three early in the fourth set but the Cards broke free to run out to an 8-4 lead and force a Weber State  timeout Three straight Jasmine Bennett kills gave UofL a 15-10  and then Maggie DeJong and Tess Clark combined for a block to take 20-15 lead. Reply Melanie McHenry  killed two straight balls to take UofL to 24-18 before Amanda Green smacked set and match point for the 25-21 win.
