LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team opened its fall practices earlier this week, while the first set of intrasquad scrimmages are slated for Friday and Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The first scrimmage of the fall is set to begin at 2:30 p.m., ET on Friday, while Saturday's scrimmage is scheduled for 4 p.m. Batting practice is expected to begin 75 minutes prior to first pitch each day and both scrimmages are open to the public.
The Cardinals started the week with Monday's annual Labor Day party where the team executed an impressive trick shot in the swimming pool, which received extensive national media coverage after video of the shot was shared on social media. Following Monday's fun, Louisville players were on the field for individual and team practice sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Cardinals will continue workouts into mid-October with scrimmages set for each week before closing the fall with the annual Pizza Bowl series. Louisville concluded its record-setting 2017 season ranked fifth in every major national poll after advancing to the College World Series for the fourth time in school history. The Cardinals set a school record for wins with a 53-12 mark and earned the program's third straight ACC Atlantic Division championship. In addition to the team success, Louisville also received numerous individual honors, highlighted by consensus National Player of the Year Brendan McKay.
Under the guidance of McDonnell, who received his second National Coach of the Year honor and his third consecutive ACC Coach of the Year award in 2017, the Louisville baseball program has earned four College World Series berths, seven NCAA Super Regional appearances, 10 NCAA Regional bids, eight regular season conference championships and two conference tournament titles while also producing 34 All-Americans.
