LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following two days of off-the-field activities after officially reporting to campus on Monday, the No. 9 Louisville men's soccer team kicked off its preseason training on the pitch with a pair of sessions on Wednesday.
The Cardinals, who are paced in 2017 by the return of All-American defender Tim Kubel as well as All-ACC performers Geoffrey Dee and Mohamed Thiaw, conducted their first preseason training on Wednesday morning before returning to the field for a second session in the evening. The demanding day of work revealed the elevated fitness level for this year's team entering the preseason.
"It's great to get going and begin our work on the field," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla, who is in his 12th season at the helm. "The preparation of the players prior to our start has been positive and has provided us a good starting point."
Louisville will continue its preseason preparations with a pair of training sessions on Thursday and a morning session on Friday before hosting the fifth annual Kickoff Banquet on Friday night in the Brown and Williamson Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals will play a trio of exhibition matches leading into the 2017 season with the first of those three tilts set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium against Lipscomb. The preseason schedule will also include a match against Indiana on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana and a home match against Oakland on Aug. 19 (7:30 p.m.) at Lynn Stadium.
CARDINALS BEGIN WEEK WITH PHOTO/VIDEO CAR WASH
Louisville players met for the first time this week on Monday morning with a preseason compliance meeting at Lynn Stadium, which was followed by equipment distribution and additional logistical meetings for both returning players and newcomers. On Monday afternoon, the Cardinals conducted their annual photo/video car wash with players assisting in the production of content for the 2017 season. The car wash included stops by each player at two different photo stations as well as four video stations.
Tuesday's schedule for the Louisville players included meetings with academic services, athletic training, sports information and sports performance. Later in the evening, the players participated in a team dinner and backyard cornhole tournament, won by Walker Andriot and Nick Blackwell.
