No. 10 Men's Soccer Visits Georgia State on Friday Night
August 31, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Kickoff for Cardinals and Panthers set for 7 p.m., ET at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Georgia
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 10 University of Louisville men's soccer team faces its first regular season road test of 2017 as the unbeaten Cardinals challenge undefeated Georgia State on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Georgia.
The match was originally slated to be played on campus at the GSU Soccer Complex, but heavy rains earlier in the week created unfavorable playing conditions on the natural grass service. LakePoint Sporting Community is located 35 miles north of downtown Atlanta in Emerson and features five sporting venues -- three multi-purpose synthetic fields, eight baseball fields, 10 beach volleyball courts, three cable wakeboarding pools and a 170,000-square-foot indoor facility with 12 basketball courts which convert to 24 volleyball courts.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's match will mark the first ever meeting on the pitch between Louisville and Georgia State. It will also mark the first time the Cardinals have played a soccer match in the state of Georgia.
ABOUT GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers enter Friday's match at 2-0-0 after earning wins against Mercer (2-0) and USC Upstate (2-0) last weekend in Atlanta. Last season, Georgia State was 14-8-0 overall and was 3-2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Panthers advanced to the title match of the Sun Belt Championship before falling 1-0 to Coastal Carolina.Â
NATIONAL POLLS
Despite winning each of its first two matches, Louisville dropped two spots in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll moving from No. 9 to No. 11 while maintaining the No. 10 position in the latest Soccer America Top 25.Â
UNBEATEN STARTS
With a win on Friday at Georgia State, Louisville would improve to 3-0-0 for the first time since starting the 2009 season with three consecutive wins. A draw would mark the second straight season the Cardinals have registered an unbeaten start through three matches after accumulating a 2-0-1 record to begin the 2016 campaign.Â
ROAD-OPENERS
The Cardinals are striving to win their road-opener for the second consecutive season after earning a 2-0 win at Connecticut in the team's first road match in 2016. Louisville is unbeaten in its last two road-openers after registering a 1-1 draw at Syracuse in 2015.
TEAM LEADERS
Junior Adrien Cabon has two of the Cardinals' three goals through the first two matches, while senior Tim Kubel has the other. Kubel has 16 career goals and 19 total assists in 65 collegiate starts at Louisville. Senior Mohamed Thiaw and junior Tate Schmitt have 12 goals each during their collegiate careers.Â
ACC MEN'S SOCCER
Nine different ACC teams are ranked in either the United Soccer Coaches Poll or Soccer America Poll, including seven teams that hold top-10 spots. In addition to the ranked teams, the top two squads in the receiving votes category of the coaches poll are Duke and Virginia Tech, giving the ACC 10 of the top 27 teams in that poll.
ACC teams were a combined 19-4 on opening weekend, including a perfect 4-0 record against ranked opponents: Louisville's win over No. 25 Butler, North Carolina's over No. 12 Providence, Virginia Tech's over No. 14 Creighton, and Wake Forest's over No. 12 Providence. The .826 nonconference winning percentage stands as the best of any league in the country.
