Thiaw scores first half goal before Lindsey Wilson connects for final two goals of the match
COLUMBIA, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team closed its spring exhibition schedule with a 2-1 loss at Lindsey Wilson College on Friday night.
Rising senior Mohamed Thiaw scored a first half goal for the Cardinals before the home side answered with a first half equalizer. Lindsey Wilson then connected for the match-winner on a counter attack in the 86th minute before holding off Louisville in the final moments.
"The whole spring has been awesome for us because we played really good matches and tonight was another really good one," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla. "Lindsey Wilson is a really good team and has some outstanding individuals and in a lot of ways stretched us tonight. I thought our guys held up well for the most part, but they gave up a counter goal late that decided the match. All in all, these games we're playing this spring have a definite realness and competitiveness to them that will certainly help us in the fall."
On a warm, clear evening, the teams dueled in a fast-paced, physical match with open field and plenty of space to play. The Cardinals struck first on Friday when Thiaw received a cross at the top of the box from Sawyer Edwards, chested the ball down and connected on a half-volley into the top corner for the 1-0 lead. Lindsey Wilson answered moments later with a transition goal to even the score at 1-1, which is where the match remained into halftime.
The intense match continued into the second half as both sides created chances in the open field. In the 76th minute, a Lindsey Wilson midfielder received a second yellow card putting the Cardinals up a man for the final 14 minutes.
Despite the disadvantage, Lindsey Wilson gained its first lead of the night in the 86th minute scoring on a counter attack. After the ball was played in behind the back four, the home side created a 1v1 chance and converted for the deciding goal. The Cardinals had a flurry of chances in the final minutes but were unable to capitalize for the equalizer.
