Six different players score two goals each for the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville (9-3) lacrosse team defeated Duquesne 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Six Louisville players finished the game with two goals each. Madison Hoover led the Cardinals with a career-high five assists.Â
"We could have won this game 8-2 and I would have been happy if we had followed our game plan," said head coach Kellie Young. "We kind of get distressed, get frustrated and then we get emotional and make bad decisions. We have to stay invested in the game for 60 minutes at a time. We have to understand the scout, apply the scout and play in the system. I know it's crazy, to be frustrated but we are trying to hold our team to a higher standard and we're trying to do great things this season."
Louisville started the game on a 4-0 run. Jillian Balog scored first for the Cardinals on a free position shot at the 27:38 mark. Hoover found Meghan Siverson in the 25th minute and then found McKayla Conti on the 17th minute for a 3-0 Cardinal lead. Taylor Wester capped the Louisville run scoring on a free position shot.Â
Duquesne answered with a 2-0 run to cut the lead to 4-2 with six minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals wrapped up the half with a 3-0 run to take a 7-2 lead into the break. Elise Koehl scored on a free position shot. Hoover found Balog for her second goal of the game. Conti scored her second goal as well on a free position shot.Â
Louisville went on a 5-0 run to open the second half and build a 12-2 lead at the 21:18 mark of the second half. Koloski scored on a free position shot.  Freshman Ashley Hoover had a hand in the next three goals. Hoover found Lynch for a goal in the 25th minute. Two minutes later Lynch found Allsion Ferrara for a goal and then hit Elise Koehl 30 seconds later for another Cardinal goal. Siverson capped the Louisville run with a goal for a 12-2 Cardinal lead.
Duquesne then went on a 3-0 run to cut the Louisville lead to 12-5 with 13:56 left to play in the game. The Cardinals responded with a 3-0 run of their own to push the lead to 15-5 with 1:45 left to play. Koloski and Webster scored on free position shots. Hoover found freshman Julia Schmuckler to cap the run. The Dukes scored in the final minute, giving Louisville a 15-6 win.
Louisville held a 14-9 advantage at the draw and a 20-13 advantage in ground balls. The Louisville attack held a 38-16 shot advantage. Brittany Read finished with four saves while Duquesne's Maddy Curtis finished with 12.Â
On the defensive end, Stephanie McNamara led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Hoover led the team with five ground balls while Koloski finished with four ground balls and four draw controls.Â
"It was a great game, just one more step in the right direction," said senior defender Stephanie McNamara. "Today we were just trying to get back on track, play as a team and just be really positive, making sure that every ounce of the game mattered. Making sure that every ground ball, every draw and every shot that we took went where we aimed to put it. It was a great team win but we still have a lot of things we need to work on, heading to Northwestern."
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, March 26 as they travel to Northwestern for a 1:00 p.m. game.Â
