LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville (7-2, 1-1) lacrosse team defeated No. 13/15 Duke (4-3, 0-3) 11-8 on Saturday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. The win is the first in the series for the Cardinals. Senior Hannah Koloski and sophomore Meghan Siverson led the Cardinals with four goals each.
Louisville started the game with a 2-0 run. Siverson got the Cardinals on the board first, taking a pass from Madison Hoover and scoring in the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Koloski scored in the next minute off after a turnover from Duke to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils responded with a 2-0 run of their own, scoring on the next two possessions. Siverson got the draw on the next possession and ran down the field and scored to put the Cards up 3-2. Louisville then capitalized off another Duke turnover to take the ball down field and Ashley Lynch hit Madison Hoover for the score and a 4-2 Cardinal lead.
Duke scored on a free position goal with 5:54 left in the first half to cut the Louisville lead to 4-3. Siverson would score the final goal of the half, with a shot at the foot of the Duke goalkeeper to take a 5-3 lead with 1:54 left in the first half.
The Cardinals kept momentum in the second half, starting with a 3-0 run. Koloski put the Cardinals up 6-3 to start the second half with an unassisted goal at the 27 minute mark. Hoover found Elise Koehl in the 24th minute. Koloski capped the run with a goal at the 18:56 mark to put Louisville up 8-3.
After a Duke timeout, the Blue Devils went on a 2-0 run to cut the lead 8-5. Duke scored on the next possession and then again at the 16:32 mark to get within three.
Louisville responded when McKayla Conti found Siverson for the score and a 9-5 lead at the 14:23 mark. On the next possession, Brittany Read made two big saves to keep the Blue Devils at bay. The Cardinals turned over the ball with a shot clock violation and the Blue Devils took advantage to with a goal at the 9:01 mark, to cut the lead to three.
Jillian Balog scored her first goal of the game to put the Cardinals up 10-6 at the 6:31 mark. Hannah Koloski scored her fourth goal of the day with 4:28 mark for an 11-6 lead. Duke finished the game with a 2-0 run to end the game, scoring at the 2:18 mark and with 38 seconds left to play. The Cardinals finished with an 11-8 win.
The Cardinals held a 24-21 shot advantage over Duke. The Blue Devils finished with a 16-5 draw controls advantage. Both teams finished with 13 ground balls. Duke finished with 18 turnovers while the Cardinals finished with 10.
Read finished with 10 saves while Duke finished with eight. Louisville had balanced scoring, Hoover, Jillian Balog and Elise Koehl each finished with a goal. Hoover led the Cardinals with two assists while McKayla Conti and Ashley Lynch each finished with one.
On the defensive end, senior Stephanie McNamara led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers while Emily Howell finished with two. McNamara also led the team with four ground balls.
Louisville will be back in action on March 15 as they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 3:00 p.m. game.
