Lacrosse Scores in the Final Seconds for a Thrilling 11-10 Win Over Vanderbilt

Hannah Koloski scores the game-winner for the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Hannah Koloski scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left in the game to lift No. 20 Louisville to an 11-10 win over Vanderbilt on Tuesday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 4-1 on the year while Vanderbilt falls to 1-1 on the year.Â
Vanderbilt scored first off the draw to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals tied it when Meghan Siverson found Jillian Balog in front of the net for the score. Vandy then went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead over the Cardinals with 10:22 remaining in the first half.Â
Head coach Kellie Young called a timeout following the third straight goal from the Commodores, which ignited a 3-0 Louisville run. At the 8:03 mark, Koloski won the draw control and ran straight down the field for the score. Eighteen seconds later Koloski found the back of the net again to get the Cardinals within one (4-3). Siverson found the back of the net a little over a minute later, tying the game at 4-4 with 6:32 left in the first half. Three minutes later Vanderbilt scored to take a 5-4 lead at the break.Â
The Cardinals started the second half on fire, scoring five straight goals. Koloski scored two straight in the opening minutes to put the Cardinals up 6-5. Taylor Webster found Balog in the 24th minute to give Louisville a 7-5 lead.Â
Three minutes later Koloski scored again and less than a minute later Siverson scored on a free position shot to give Louisville a 9-5 lead. The Commodores responded with a 3-0 run of their own to get within one goal (9-8). With 12 minutes remaining, Balog scored on a free position shot to give Louisville an assurance goal.Â
With five minutes remaining in the half, Vanderbilt got within one with a goal by Kayla Peterson. Two and a half minutes later the Commodores tied the game up after a goal by Julie Blaze, 10-10.Â
The Cardinals won the draw on the next possession but the teams traded turnovers and Vanderbilt had the ball in the final minutes. The Commodores committed a foul and the Cardinals regained possession. With 41 seconds left to play, Young called a timeout to set up a play.Â
The Cardinals got the ball to Koloski in the final seconds and she beat her defender to score the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining. Time ran out on the draw, securing the Louisville win.Â
Koloski led the Cardinals with six goals while Balog finished with three and Siverson with two.Â
The Cardinals held an 11-10 edge over the Commodores in draw controls. Both teams finished with 11 ground balls. Louisville held a 31-26 shot advantage.Â
Brittany Read finished with 11 saves in the game, she held the Commodores to 0-6 in free position shots in the second half. Vanderbilt's Callahan Kent finished with 11 saves as well.Â
Siverson led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers and eight draw controls.  Siverson also finished with five ground balls.Â
