Kubel, Schmitt Earn United Soccer Coaches All-Region Honors

Kubel named to All-South Region First Team; Schmitt selected for All-South Region Third Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior defender Tim Kubel was named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team, while junior midfielder Tate Schmitt was a Third Team selection.
Kubel capped his final collegiate season as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and an All-ACC First Team honoree while scoring six goals with seven assists in 19 matches for the Cardinals. A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Kubel concluded his career with 21 goals and a school record 26 assists in 82 matches during his four seasons. Kubel is a four-time All-ACC selection, a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and was an All-American honoree in 2016.
Schmitt finished 2017 with a team-leading nine goals, including four game-winners, and added three assists while starting all 20 matches. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Schmitt delivered the game-winning goals in each of Louisville's four NCAA Championship wins over the last two seasons. Through three collegiate seasons, the 2017 All-ACC Third Team selection has 21 career goals, including 10 game-winners. Â
The Cardinals closed the 2017 season with a 13-2-5 record after suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 shootout loss to Akron in last Friday's NCAA Championship quarterfinal match at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Under the guidance of head coach Ken Lolla, Louisville reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last eight years.
