Cardinals look to build on momentum for the ACC Championship
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a strong showing by the University of Louisville women's cross country team at the ACC Championships, the Cardinals' men's and women's teams now turn their attention to the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Regional Championships. The meet will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Panorama Farms Cross Country Course.
The event will commence with the women's 6K race at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 10K race at 11:30 a.m. The top two teams will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 18 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville. Then at-large bids will be handed out following all the regional races.
Ranked fourth in the region, the Cardinals' women's squad is looking to continue the strong momentum from their second-place finish at the ACC meet. Sophomore Dorcas Wasike placed second in the individual race, posting a personal-best time of 19:54.1 and earning All-ACC honors. With a 15th-place finish and personal-best time of 20:31.2, fellow sophomore Kassidy Manning also earned a spot on the All-ACC Team. Seniors Mia Ross and Bailey Davis finished 22nd and 23 respectively, just missing out on the conference honors. Louisville's finish was the best ACC result for a cross country team in school history, topping the women's fourth-place finish last season.
Defending regional champion NC State enters the meet ranked fifth in the nation, following its victory in the ACC Championships. The meet will also feature nationally-ranked squads from Furman and Eastern Kentucky, who both grabbed their respective conference championships.
In last year's regional, the Louisville women finished second and earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Championships. Wasike placed second in the field with a time of 20:36.0 and earned USTFCCCA All-Region accolades.
In the men's race, the Cardinals will look to rebound from a tough outing at the ACC Championships. Junior Daniel Fleace continued an outstanding campaign with a personal-best time of 24:15.5, placing 33rd in the overall finish. Freshman Ben Ewert also set a new personal-best time of 25:26.6 and placed 91st in the field. Redshirt freshman Albert Kosgei will look to bounce back from the ACC meet and resume his terrific rookie season.
NC State enters the meet as the defending men's champion, but the Wolfpack will be challenged by fellow ranked squads Furman and Virginia Tech. Last season, the Cards placed 11th as former standouts Edwin Kibichiy and Calvin Chemoiywo placed in the top 10 and received All-Region honors.
