Cards pick up sweep as highlight
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On the second day of competition at the Louisville Tennis Classic, the University of Louisville women's team dominated in doubles, but was unable to carry the momentum into the singles round.
Â
"The fall season in general is a prep for the spring dual match season," said coach Mark Beckham. "More than anything, I want to see the new players. I have a transfer and two freshmen, and I want to see how they respond to a dual match situation. It is one final look to see what I have to make my final decision as far as my spring lineup."
Â
The Cards opened the morning with another 3-0 sweep over Ball State in doubles competition. In the No.1 position, the duo of Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg defeated Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington 6-2. Louisville earned a pair of 6-0 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions as Sena Suswam and Raven Neely bested Peyton Gollhofer and Isabelle Dohanics, while Ariana Rodriguez and Tiffany Huber prevailed over Sarah Swiderski and Victoria Sec.
Â
The Cardinals also blanked former conference rival WVU 3-0 in doubles action. The No. 1 pair of Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg defeated Sofia Duran and Lyn Yuen Choo 6-4.  Raven Neely and Sena Suswam combined forces at No. 2 to beat Christina Jordan and Anne-Sophie Corteau 6-3.  The No. 3 pair of Ariana Rodriguez and Tiffany Huber rolled 6-0 over Giovanna Caputo and Kirsten White.Â
Â
"I tried to find as competitive of teams which were available that I could to come here," said coach Beckham. "I try to find the best possible teams I can because it is the last event of the fall, so, I want us to be as challenged as possible."
Â
Rounding out doubles play for the morning, Michigan State picked up two wins against West Virginia en route to a 2-1 victory over the Mountaineers. The Spartans also swept Ball State in a 3-0 decision.
Â
Louisville opened the afternoon singles round with a matchup against Michigan State, but the Spartans proved to be too much to handle. In the Cards' lone victory at No. 3, Huber rebounded from a dropped second set to pull through in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. In fifth position, Maya Smith came up just short, falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-10.
Â
"For our newcomers, it is typical in that they don't understand that you don't have to be 100 percent to still perform and win matches because you can," said Coach Mark Beckham. "Little things like overcoming a bit of adversity is what they will gain an understanding of this fall. These three new ones are pretty good. They are going to help us out, impact our team and make a difference in how good we are."
Â
In other singles action, Anna Collins was defeated by Michigan State's Lexi Baylis 6-2, 6-4.
Â
The Cards will conclude competition at the Louisville Tennis Classic tomorrow morning with a final singles matchup against Ball State at 1:00 p.m.
