Volleyball Sweeps Virginia Tech
November 12, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Cards are 21-6 and 14-2 in the ACC
The University of Louisville volleyball team swept the Virginia Tech Hokies 3-0, winning 28-26, 25,18, 25-16 Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Arena. The Cardinals improve to 21-6 (14-2) and stay undefeated in the ACC at home in Cardinal Arena.
"Anytime you can have a weekend sweep in the ACC it's a good weekend, I think we need to be able to play better, for two matches in a row and got to be a team on a mission. Today was a little disappointing, I didn't feel that from the point one, it was good to pick it up throughout the match and end on a really high note," said Dani Busboom Kelly, UofL head coach.
Â
Amanda Green and Tess Clark powered the offense for the Cardinals, tallying 13 and 10 kills, respectively. The Cardinals were able to out-dig the Hokies 44-32, while accumulating three service aces to Virginia Tech's one. The Cards hit .320 for the match with 44 digs and six blocks. WIlma Rivera added 40 assists and Molly Sauer had 11 digs. Virginia Tech moves to 9-18 and 3-13 in the ACC. The Hokies were led by Kaity Smith's 17 kills and three blocks. Â
Â
In the opening set that saw 21 ties and eight lead changes, both sides suffered from rally-killing service errors throughout the first set. While Virginia Tech made a threat going up 24-22, the timeout used by the Cardinals switched the momentum back in their favor to tie the set at 24 and fight for the win. A service error for Virginia Tech followed by a kill from Tess Clark ended the first set. The Cardinals won the set 28-26, led by Amanda Green with five kills.
Â
After trading points with the Hokies for the first 10, Amanda Green was able to kill three straight for the Cardinals. Louisville then found their rhythm to take their biggest lead of the match so far, 15-10. Virginia Tech went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead back to five. After calling a timeout up 23-18, the Cardinals secured their final two points on a service error and attack error by the Hokies.
Â
In the final set, the Cardinals grabbed the lead at the third point of the set and held onto it for the remainder of the match. The Cardinals were able to jump out to a five-point lead, 15-10, for the second set in a row. After extending their lead 19-13, Virginia Tech took a timeout in hopes of sparking their offense. The Cardinals were able to hold on, only allowing three more points to the Hokies before notching the final point on an attack error by Virginia Tech and win the set, 25-16.
Â
The Cardinals return to action at Cardinal Arena Friday to face the N.C. State Wolfpack at 7:30 p.m. The Wolfpack is tied for first with the Cardinals and a win would give UofL possession of first.Â
"We earned the right to make that a big match, this was our goal to make every match important and Friday will obviously be important, NC State looks great, they have a great setter and that's a great place to start," said Busboom KellyÂ
