Volleyball Beats Virginia Tech 3-1

Amanda Green had 13 kills and three blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 win over Virginia Tech in ACC volleyball action Friday night in Blacksburg, Va.

The Cards, who improved their record to 10-5 and 4-1 in the ACC, hit .221 with 15 blocks and seven aces. Jasmine Bennet had 10 blocks with eight kills. Melanie McHenry had 13 kills and 14 digs. Wilma Rivera had 39 assists and nine digs. Tech falls to 7-9 and 1-4 in ACC play. The Hokies hit .162 and had one block and no aces. The Hokies were led by Jaila Tolbert's 15 kills.

In the first set, UofL was rocked by .406 hitting by Tech. The Hokies popped out to a 4-0 lead and the Cards could not string together any runs to overcome that lead. UofL was hampered by .059 hitting and only had a single block. The Cards came within one several times, but a late run gave the Hokies a 25-20 win.

The Cards hit .315 in the second set and had a 13-9 lead when Tech called its first timeout. The break did little to change the momentum as the Cards surged to an 18-11 lead when the Hokies used their final timeout. UofL's block came alive, with four in the set led by Jasmine Bennett's four block assists and her four kills added a much-needed offensive boost as well.

Coming out of the break, UofL buzzed out to a 9-3 lead on an ace by Melanie McHenry. The Cards used .294 hitting and had five more blocks to keep the Hokies at arm's length. Tech made a run late, coming within four at 23-19 and sparked a Cardinal timeout but Tech would not score again as the Cards rolled 25-19.
