Cards hope to keep momentum going in ACC play.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a successful home stand, the University of Louisville volleyball team heads east for a pair of ACC road matches at Virginia Tech and Virginia.Â
The Cardinals (9-5, 3-1 ACC) will take on the Hokies (7-8, 1-3 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Cavaliers (4-11, 0-4 ACC) on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be available for streaming on ACC Network Extra.
Louisville enters the trip with increased momentum after sweeping both No. 21 Florida State and undefeated Miami last weekend. After taking the opening two sets at 25-20, the Cardinals were pushed to the brink by the Seminoles in the third set, before sophomore outside hitter Melanie McHenry scored four of the final five points in a 31-29 set victory.
Â
In Sunday match against the Hurricanes, the Cards leaped out to big leads in each set, but faced strong comebacks in the final two sets. In the third, Miami clawed back to take a slim lead, but a pair of Louisville blocks finished off the victory.
Â
For her efforts, McHenry was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week, tallying 33 total kills, a .333 hitting percentage, 20 digs and three blocks. The Cardinals rank third in the league with 13.51 kills per set and 14.55 digs per set. Junior setter Wilma Rivera leads the conference with 10.73 assists per set.
Â
Virginia Tech has struggled in the beginning of the ACC play, including a 3-0 loss last Sunday at Pitt. First-year head coach Jill Lytle Wilson's Hokies have dropped both home matches this year, but did grab their first ACC victory last Wednesday at rival Virginia. Louisville leads the all-time series between the schools, 20-2, including a 3-1 victory last year in Blacksburg, Va.
Â
First-year coach Aaron Smith's Cavaliers have not won a match since downing Ohio on Sept. 9, but they have been competitive in matches against Virginia Tech, Florida State and Miami. Although Virginia prevailed 3-0 last season, Louisville still leads the all-time series, 4-3.
