Cleveland registers sixth shutout of the season, Thiaw scores fifth goal as the Cardinals move to 6-1-1
ST. LOUIS - A first half goal by junior Mohamed Thiaw proved to be enough as the 13th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team registered its fourth straight shutout with a 1-0 road win over Saint Louis on Tuesday night at Hermann Stadium.
Thiaw scored for the third time in the last four matches, while graduate goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland turned away a season-high four shots as the Cardinals (6-1-1) extended their longest winning streak since a four-match stretch in September 2014. The four consecutive shutouts are the most for Louisville since setting a school record with five straight shutouts in 2013.
"It was a great road win. We saw tonight that we can grind out wins when we're not at our best," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "I'm proud of the guys."
Louisville, which moved into the NSCAA Top 25 for the first time this season on Tuesday landing at No. 13 overall, connected for the only goal of the night at the 10-minute mark of the first half when junior Tim Kubel slipped a pass along the right side of the 18-yard box to Thiaw, who scored inside the far left post for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The goal was the third game-winning tally of the season for Thiaw, while Kubel was credited with his third assist.
The early goal was all the Cardinals needed as Cleveland anchored another strong performance by the Louisville defense, which clinched its sixth shutout of the season. A transfer from Dartmouth, Cleveland has allowed only two goals while playing all 743:14 minutes this season for a miniscule 0.24 goals against average. Cleveland and the Cardinals have not allowed a goal in more than 409 minutes of game action.
Louisville finished Tuesday's match with an 11-8 advantage in shots marking the seventh time in eight matches this season they have out-shot an opponent. The Billikens had a 4-3 edge in shots on-goal and a 5-3 cushion in corner kick chances.
Up next, No. 13 Louisville returns home to host ACC foe and 16th-ranked Virginia on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
