Allison Whitfield scores the game-winner off a corner kick
Pittsburgh, Pa. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened up ACC play with a 1-0 road win at Pittsburgh on Saturday night. Freshman Allison Whitfield led the Cardinals to a win with her second goal of the season. The Cardinals improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in ACC play.
"It is great to open the ACC with a win, especially one on the road," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Our backline did well and Taylor was very good in goal tonight to help us get the shutout."
The Cardinals struck first in the 15th minute with their first corner kick of the match. Whitfield bent the kick into the far corner over the goalkeeper's head for a 1-0 lead. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.
Louisville had another chance on a free kick from 19 yards out. However, Gabrielle Vincent's shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Louisville finished the first half with a 7-4 shot advantage and a 3-2 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Taylor Bucklin finished with four saves in the half while Pitt's Taylor Francis finished with two.
Pitt applied more offensive pressure in the second half, trying to score the equalizer. The Cardinal back line held tight and Bucklin thwarted any opportunity for the Panthers, finishing with a season-high eight saves.
The Panthers' best opportunity of the half came in the final five minutes with a multitude of shots. Bucklin turned the first shot by Kaylee Rabatin away and a header off a free kick sailed high, securing the shutout for the Cardinals.
Louisville finished the match with a 13-9 shot advantage. Both teams finished with three corner kicks. Pitt's Francis finished with five saves while Bucklin finished with eight.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 22 as the travel to Duke.
