September 22, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Cardinals remain undefeated in the ACC with a tie against the Blue Devils
Durham, N.C. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team wrapped up a two game road stint with a scoreless tie at No. 7 Duke on Thursday evening. Both teams improve to 6-2-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in ACC play.
In the series, both team have played 440 minutes and neither team has scored a goal.
"Duke has been by far the best opponent we have faced this year," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought we were exceptional defensively and also had our fair share of attacking chances. I am very proud of our team effort tonight against the 2015 runner-up and current number seven team in the country."
The Blue Devils outshot the Cardinals, 31-9, but only seven shots were on goal while the Cardinals had five on goal. The Cardinal backline made it difficult for the Blue Devils' attack and Cardinal keeper Taylor Bucklin stopped all seven shots from getting through the net.
The Blue Devils held much of the possession in the first half, finishing with five shots on goal. The Cardinal defense led to more confidence on the offensive end as the half went on. The Cardinals best shot of the half came in the 38th minute when Alison Price's header was saved.
Freshman Brooklynn Rivers had an opportunity in the 55th minute, after jumping in front of a Duke defender and sending a shot just past the far post.
In a flurry of shots by the Blue Devils in a span of less than a minute, Duke nearly got on the board in the 71st minute. The Cardinals blocked a shot and then a cross in front of the goal led to a sliding Taylor Racioppi's shot in point-blank range that went off Bucklin's knee and out. It led to a corner kick and Olivia Erlbeck launched a shot that went wide.
In the 83rd minute the Cardinals had several chances as well. Sarah Feola had a shot go high then two minutes later her shot was saved. Two minutes later Price had a chance that was saved. The backline stopped two shots in the final minutes of regulation, forcing the overtime period.
Feola had another chance for the Cardinals in the first overtime period but E.J. Proctor made the save. Bucklin made a save of her own to force the second overtime period. Both teams had a shot on goal in the second overtime period but were unable to get them past the keepers.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 25 as the host No. 17 Boston College in Lynn Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
