Rivers Lifts Louisville to a 2-1 Overtime Win Over Belmont

Brooklynn Rivers scores two goals in the Cards’ win over Belmont
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville freshman Brooklynn Rivers scored two goals to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 overtime win over Belmont on Sunday night in Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 5-2-1 on the season while Belmont falls to 1-3-3 on the season.
Belmont struck first in the 22nd minute of the game. Junior Heather Ferrari sent a cross through the air that found its way to Bruin midfielder Emily Whitcomb whose shot on goal was cleared by a Louisville defender. Meg Howard gathered the ball send it in past Louisville goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
Louisville would get another shot with 42nd mark of the first half when freshman Arianna Ferraro sent a cross into the box that found the head of fellow freshman Allison Whitfield whose shot went high. Belmont finished the first half with a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinal's best chance of the game came at the 60th minute mark of the second half. Junior Kaela Dickerman sent a cross to Ferraro whose shot sailed high.
Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute after a a hand ball by a Bruin defender was called. Freshman Callie McKinney stepped up to take the penalty kick, sending the shot to the left side which was saved by Stephanie Bukovec.
Eight minutes later, Alison Price was dribbling through the top of the box and was tripped up by the Bruin defense and resulted in another penalty kick. Rivers would step to the ball and sent a bullet past the keeper in the left side of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
Louisville continued to add pressure to the Bruins' defense but were unable to come up with the game-winner in regulation.
The Cardinals continued to apply pressure and control possession in the overtime period. The pressure would pay off in the 98th minute. Rivers got free on a breakaway, dribbling through defenders and placed a ball over the goalkeeper's head for the game-winner.
Louisville finished the game with a 24-6 shot advantage, while both teams were awarded two corner kicks for the game. Louisville finished with three saves while Bucklin finished with two. Belmont's Bukovec finished with eight saves.
The Cardinals begin ACC play on the road this weekend when they travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
