Friday's opener is the second match of a women's/men's doubleheader at Lynn Stadium. The Louisville women's team will host UAB at 5:30 p.m., and numerous fan-focused events are slated for Friday, including a "buy one, get one free" ticket offer. The opening weekend of action for the Cardinals will conclude Monday at 7:30 p.m., at Lynn Stadium against Quinnipiac.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Louisville returns eight players with 13 or more starts from last year's team, including the top three goal scorers in sophomore Tate Schmitt (seven goals), senior Daniel Johnson (five goals) and junior Tim Kubel (five goals). Schmitt was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team, while Kubel (First Team) and Johnson (Second Team) were tabbed All-ACC selections last season. The Cardinals were 7-9-3 overall last season and finished tied for fifth in the ACC Atlantic with a 1-4-3 conference mark.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs posted an impressive 10-4-4 record a season ago, finishing third in the Big East with a 6-3 conference record. Butler was one of the last six programs in the country last season to register a loss (which didn't come until Oct. 6) after starting the season 6-0-3. Butler did not advance out of the Big East quarterfinals as Providence moved on to the semifinals in penalty kicks. In tight voting by the league's coaches, Butler was selected to finish fifth in the 2016 Big East campaign.
