Louisville Wraps Up Spring Season With Momentum

Cardinals finish with a strong 3-0 win over MSU to improve to 3-1-1 in the spring
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the final match of the 2016 spring campaign, the Louisville men's soccer team was able to continue its momentum and earn a 3-0 shutout over Michigan State at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on April 17.
"We got another positive result to finish the spring," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla." We were very sound defensively to earn another shutout, which is encouraging. On the attacking side of it, we did well to create chances and then capitalize on our opportunities.
The shutout was the third in five games for junior goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux, anchored by stalwart center back Michael DeGraffenreidt, freshman Cody Cochran, freshman Danny Reynolds and senior Jerry Ramirez, back on the field after a series of injuries over his career.
"The focus of the spring was to do a better job of not conceding goals," continued Lolla." We felt like in the fall the main issue was conceding too many goals and especially too many soft goals. We wanted to instill into our culture, both tactically and philosophically, that our priority is to defend as a unit. An indication of that is that we only played from behind for 12 minutes the entire spring."
Offensively, the Cards scored nine goals, let by three set piece goals from sophomore midfielder Tim Kubel. Transfer midfielder Geoffrey Dee contributed two goals, with additional tallies coming from Reynolds, junior midfielder Daniel Johnson, sophomore midfielder Sawyer Edwards, and freshman mifielder Grant Hollkamp.
"As the spring went a long, we started to score goals in bunches, with the five-goal game and three-goal game reinforcing our ability to convert. We found a momentum and a confidence that will carry over to the fall," finished Lolla.
The Cardinals disperse throughout the country for the summer, joining several PDL programs for the offseason. Stay tuned to GoCards.com for the official release of the fall schedule, featuring 10 home matches at Lynn Stadium.
