Becker and Hensley toss complete game shutouts as Cards sweep Eagles 9-0 and 5-0
The University of Louisville softball team got complete game shutouts from junior Maryssa Becker and freshman Megan Hensley in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central. The Cardinals beat the Eagles 9-0 in the first game and took the nightcap 5-0.

Louisville 9 – North Carolina Central 0 (Five innings)
Becker tied her career high with 11 strikeouts and helped her own cause with a 2 for 3, two RBI, two run performance at the plate lead Louisville to a 9-0 win in game one.

The Cards took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomores Jenna Jordan and Nicole Pufahl delivered back-to-back hits. One out later, senior Brittany Sims laced a two-run double down the left field line and took third on the throw. Freshman Jordan Vorbrink followed with a sacrifice fly.

Louisville added a pair of runs in the third. Sophomore Sidney Melton got the home half of the inning started with a hit and proceeded to steal second. Becker followed with an RBI single and took second on the throw. Hensley's base hit put runners on the corners for Jordan who singled to bring Becker home and give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals used six hits, including a two-run homer by Hensley to put up a four-spot in the fourth. Freshman Jordan Vorbrink connected on a leadoff triple and junior Morgan Meyer reached on an infield single to put two runners on for Melton whose groundout sent Vorbrink home. Becker's RBI hit plated Meyer. Hensley stepped up to the plate and sent a shot over the left field fence for her team-best 12th homer of the season to give Louisville a 9-0 lead.

The Eagles threatened to score in the top of the fifth when London Booker doubled to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout, but Becker delivered her 11th strikeout of the contest to end the game and preserve the shutout.

Becker (16-6) got the win, scattering three hits en route to her fourth shutout of the season. Hensley went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Jordan was 2 for 2 with an RBI and Pufahl was 2 for 3 with a run. Â Sims went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Jennifer Allison (1-13) took the loss after giving up nine earned runs on 13 hits and striking out one in four innings.

In game two of the doubleheader, Hensley registered a career-high 10 strikeout en route to a one-hit, Â complete game shutout and went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI to help lead the Cards to a 5-0 win.

After playing through four complete scoreless innings, the Louisville broke through with five runs in the fifth. Melton registered a one-out single and was safe at second on Becker's fielder's choice. Hensley singled to plate Melton and was lifted for pinch-runner Tiarra Sanabria who moved to third on freshman Lillie Goetz's RBI double. Sophomore Alison Szydlowski followed with an RBI hit and Vorbrink's third triple of the season sent Goetz and Szydlowski home to give the Cards a 5-0 lead. Hensley retired the next six batters she faced to ensure the shutout.

North Carolina Central's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when London Booker reached on a two-out error and moved to third when Casey Hargett broke up Hensley's no-hitter with a double. Hensley got Dominique Wilson to groundout to Melton at shortstop to hold the Eagles at bay.
Hensley (13-3) allowed one hit and one walk to notch her second shutout of the season. Goetz went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run while Vorbrink finished the game going 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Booker (3-15) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and striking out three in five innings of work.

The teams will wrap up the series with a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
