Louisville improves to 2-1-1 for 2016 spring season
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - In the last road match of the 2016 spring campaign, the Louisville men's soccer team was able to continue its momentum and earn a 1-0 shutout win at East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon. Â
"We got another good result on the road on a day," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla. "While we weren't particularly sharp on the attacking end, we were very good defensively and worked well as a unit to limit their chances." Â
It was a cagey start as both teams played cautiously for the first 20 minutes of the match. The offense for the Cardinals came primarily from the right flank through midfielder Daniel Johnson. The best chances for the Cardinals came from maintaining possession with patience, swinging the ball back and forth through the midfield and playing in between the lines. Perhaps the best chance of the first half came in the 36th minutes when defender Jerry Ramirez hit a in swinging cross to the back post to midfielder Tim Kubel. Kubel took the ball down well and hit a left footed shot of the near post and out of bounds.
Early in the second half, defender Danny Reynolds asserted himself into the attack. In the 50th minute, Reynolds played a dangerous cross to the near post for forward Tate Schmitt, whose shot was saved by the keeper. Then in the 63rd minute, Reynolds hit a swerving free kick into the box that was denied by an acrobatic save from the Bucs goalkeeper.
Louisville goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux, along with centerbacks Cody Cochrane and Michael DeGraffenredit, were stalwart defenders throughout the match. The defensemen were particularly tested during a brief spell in the second half were Jamilloux came up with a pair of big saves.
The Cardinals goal came in the 83rd minute when Schmitt wrestled with two defenders in the box on a throw in from Reynolds and earned a penalty kick from the referee. Kubel stepped up to the mark once again and executed the PK with composure and decisiveness.Â
"On a day when you aren't producing and scoring goals, it's reassuring to get a shutout, and it's significant to be able to pull out a result, especially on the road," finished Lolla.
The Cardinals finish the spring campaign with a home match on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m., ET against Michigan State. The game will be played at Cardinal Park and admission is free.
