Softball Sweeps on Day One of Louisville Softball Classic

Cards beat Jacksonville State 6-3 and Dayton 14-2
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Morgan Meyer went 4 for 4 on the day as the University of Louisville softball team defeated Jacksonville State 6-3 and Dayton 14-2 in the Louisville Softball Classic on Friday at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville (15-6) will take on Eastern Kentucky at 12 p.m. Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. Admission is free.
Louisville 6 - Jacksonville 3
In the Cardinals' first game of the tournament, freshman Lillie Goetz drove in two runs as the Cards matched a season-high with 14 hits en route to a 6-3 win over Jacksonville State. Junior Maryssa Becker (6-4) struck out three to get the win and freshman Megan Hensley picked up her second save of the season.
Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Sidney Melton reached safely on an infield single and junior Maryssa Becker followed with a walk. Both runners moved on freshman Megan Hensley's groundout and Goetz's sacrifice fly put the Cards on the board.
The Gamecocks (9-12) got the run back in the top of the second when Stephanie Lewis led off with a double and took third on Jordan Bullock's base hit. Leila Chambers was hit by a pitch to load the bases and one out later Ella Denes drew a bases-load walk to even the score at 1-1.
The Cards regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Sophomore Jenna Jordan connected on a leadoff hit, took second in Melton's groundout and came home on Becker's RBI single. A double by Goetz plated Becker to give Louisville a 3-1 lead.
Jacksonville State answered with two unearned runs in the fourth. Bullock reached on a leadoff error and one out later, Emily Woodruff singled to put two runners on for Denes' RBI hit. Taylor Sloan followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game a 3-3.
Louisville responded in the home half of the fourth. Sophomore Alison Szydlowski singled and moved to second on Meyer's base hit. Melton's RBI hit sent Szydlowski home to pull the Cards ahead 4-3.
The fifth inning brought another Louisville run, this time from a Szydlowski RBI single. Goetz walked and moved into scoring on junior Sarah Lopesilvero's fielder's choice to set up the insurance run.
The Cardinals capped the scoring with Hensley's RBI single in the sixth. Becker walked and was lifted for pinch-runner sophomore Jessica Adell who stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on Hensley's base hit for the 6-3 final.
Meyer finished the game with a 2 for 2 showing at the plate. Louisville also got multi-hit performance from four other players in its lineup with Melton, Becker, Hensley, Szydlowski each registering two hits.
Taylor West (3-4) took the loss for the Gamecocks after giving up six runs, five earned, on 14 hits in 6.0 innings of work. Woodruff went 2 for 3 with a run and Sloan was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Jacksonville State at the plate.
Louisville 14 - Dayton 2 (5 innings)
Meyer went 2 for 2 with a double and a triple and a career-high five RBIs to help the Cardinals score a season-high 14 runs in a 14-2 win over Dayton. Freshman Megan Hensley (9-2) scattered five hits and struck out two to get the complete game win.
The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Melton led off with an infield hit and scored when Hensley reached on an error. Sophomore Jenna Jordan's single sent Hensley home for the second run of the inning.
Louisville used four walks and six hits to put up nine runs as every player in the Cards lineup scored in the second inning. The home half of the frame was highlighted by Lopesilvero's two-run single and Meyer's bases-clearing three-run triple. Becker, Hensley, and junior Jordan McNary all delivered RBI singles and senior Brittany Sims earned a bases-loaded walk.
The fourth inning saw three more runs for the Cards. Sims registered a one-out hit and McNary reached on a fielder's choice to set up Meyer's two-run double. Becker doubled Meyer home to put Louisville up 14-0.
The Flyers (7-9)got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth. Jaclyn Kweder delivered a leadoff hit and Aspyn Novak walked to set the stage for Katelyn Gibson's two-run single to make the score 14-2.
Hensley (9-2) got the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out two in 5.0 innings. Jordan was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Melton went 2 for 4 with two runs and Becker went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and added a run for the Cardinals.
Manda Cash (1-3) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on four hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work.
