Maryssa Becker goes 3 for 3 with three RBIs and gets win in circle
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Maryssa Becker went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and got the win in the circle to lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 6-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky at Ulmer Stadium Saturday afternoon in the Louisville Softball Classic.
"I'm really proud of our team," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We made some great adjustments today with Maryssa Becker in the circle and then Megan Hensley coming in relief. I thought Sidney Melton did a good job at shortstop and made some great plays for us. Overall, what I really liked today is how our team came out with a lot of energy and that's what our team needed to do."
The Cards (16-6) jumped to an early lead when sophomore Sidney Melton led off the home half of the first with a hit and stole second. Becker followed with an RBI single to put Louisville on the scoreboard.
Louisville tacked on another run in the second when sophomore Alison Szydlowski sent a shot over the fence in left centerfield for her first career home run which increase the Cardinals' lead to 2-0.
The fourth inning saw four more Louisville runs courtesy of a two-run single by junior Morgan Meyer and Becker's two-run double. Junior Sarah Lopesilvero drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double by senior Brittany Sims. Szydlowski was hit by a pitch to load the bases for junior Morgan Meyer's single which sent Lopesilvero and Sims home. Melton reached on a fielder's choice and stole second for the second time in the game. Becker stepped up to the plate and connected on her third hit of the game to plate Szydlowski and Melton and give the Cards a 6-0 lead.
The Colonels (15-6) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Paige Murphy led off the frame with a double. Hannah Clark singled and stole second to place two runners in scoring position with no outs in the inning. Reliever Megan Hensley fanned Sarah Fobbs, but Rachel Minogue's groundout scored Murphy to make it a 6-1 game. Hensley dealt her second strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Becker (7-4) got the win, holding the Colonels scoreless on six hits and striking out two in 4.0 innings. Hensley picked up her third save of the season after allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out two in 3.0 innings of relief.
Alex Sallberg (4-2) took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned on three hits in 2.0 innings. Murphy paced the Colonels offensively with a 3 for 4, one run performance at the plate. Johnkyria Alston went 2 for 3.
The Cardinals (16-6) return to action on Sunday when they face No. 2 Michigan at 10 a.m. and Dayton at 2:30 p.m.
