Louisville paced by strong performance from goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux; Cardinals host Indy Eleven on March 25
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kadeem Dacres connected for the only goal of the night scoring in the 79th minute to lift Louisville City FC to a 1-0 victory over the University of Louisville men's soccer team in Thursday night's spring friendly at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
On a soggy evening in Louisville where much of the match was played in a steady rain, an announced crowd of 1,168 watched as Dacres provided the difference with his left-footed rocket from 20 yards away tucking it inside the far left post for the visitors, who are preparing for their second season in the United Soccer League. It was the first of five spring matches for the Cardinals, who was led by a strong effort from senior goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux.
"I loved the grit from our guys and I loved the emotional aspect and the fight. To be facing a team that was one of the best in the USL last season and one that I expect to win a lot of games (this year), I thought we put ourselves in a good spot to get a result tonight. For that, I give our guys a lot of credit," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "I thought Theo was awesome tonight. He made some big saves to keep us in the game and he couldn't be faulted for the goal. Overall, he had a good outing and I know there's even more in him."
The Cardinals narrowly missed on two chances to strike first in the opening half when Louisville City goalkeeper Scott Goodwin made a pair of saves on shots from Tim Kubel and Romilio Hernandez in the 26th minute. Another chance came in the second half for the home club with back-to-back corner kicks in the 56th minute, but the Cardinals were unable to put a shot on goal during the highly physical match.
"It was two Louisville teams and neither side wanted to give any ground and it got a little physical and a little chippy," Lolla told reporters after the match. "I was proud of our guys because we didn't get bullied tonight and I thought we stood up to it and handled it well."
The match also featured the return of Louisville men's soccer alum Paolo DelPiccolo, who is in his first season with Louisville City. DelPiccolo played for the Cardinals from 2009-12, when he was a member of four straight NCAA Championship qualifiers and earned All-Conference honors during the program's College Cup season in 2010.
The Cardinals will continue their spring exhibition schedule with a home match against North American Soccer League foe Indy Eleven on Friday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m., ET at Cardinal Park.
