GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Seven University of Louisville men's basketball players have been named to the annual All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
Earning the honor for the Cardinals are Deng Adel, Trey Lewis, Mangok Mathiang, Donovan Mitchell, Chinanu Onuaku, Quentin Snider and Raymond Spalding. The seven selections for Louisville was a league-high on the 26-member team. Pittsburgh placed four on the squad while Duke had three selections.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
North Carolina's Marcus Paige received the Skip Prosser Award for the second straight year, presented annually to the top scholar-athlete in ACC men's basketball. It is named in memory of Wake Forest head basketball coach George Edward "Skip" Prosser, who passed away on July 26, 2007. Prosser compiled a 291-146 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach, including a 126-68 mark in his six years with Wake Forest. Every Wake Forest senior he coached graduated, and the Deacons placed nine players on the annual All-ACC Academic Basketball Team during his tenure.
Paige and Duke's Amile Jefferson each earned a spot on the league's academic honor team for the fourth time in their respective careers. Clemson's Jordan Roper earned academic recognition for a third time while Onuaku, Mathiang, Snider, Duke's Grayson Allen, Georgia Tech's Tadric Jackson, Miami's Davon Reed and Virginia Tech's Devin Wilson earned spots on the honors team for a second time.
Ranking third in the ACC in blocked shots (2.0) and is sixth in rebounds (8.6), Onuaku received additional academic recognition earlier this year. A sophomore communication major from Lanham, Md., he was been named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 Men's Basketball first team, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
The 11th-ranked Cardinals (22-7, 11-5 ACC) have had a successful year both on the court and academically. In the fall semester, 13 of 15 men's basketball student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or better grade point average. The Cardinals posted a collective 3.36 GPA for the 2015 fall semester, just short of the team record of 3.47 achieved in 2013.
