Cardinals Defeat No. 14 Boston College in Overtime on Saturday Afternoon

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Hannah Koloski scored on a free position shot in overtime to lift the Cardinals to a 7-6 win over No. 14 Boston College on Saturday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Kaylin Morissette and Kelli Gerding led the Cardinals (5-0, 1-0) with two goals apiece.  Â
Louisville scored first in the tightly contested game with a goal by Morissette four minutes into the first half. Boston College then scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead at the 10:35 mark. The Cardinals answered when Cortnee Daley snuck a shot past the goalkeeper to cut the lead to 3-2 with 9:18 remaining in the first half.Â
Gerding tied the game at 3-3 with 4:39 left in the half. The Eagles were able to take a 4-3 lead at the half with a goal by Sarah Mannelly at the 2:17 mark.
Both teams finished the first half with 10 shots while the Cardinals held a 5-3 lead in draw controls. Zoe Ochoa finished with seven saves in the first half while Brittany Read finished with four saves.Â
The Cardinals started the second half with a 3-0 run to take a 6-4 lead in the first 10 minute of the half. Once again Morissette got the scoring run started with a goal off Koloski's pass. Daley then found Gerding at the 22:18 mark, giving the Cards a 5-4 lead. Stephanie McNamara scored her first goal of the season at the 20:57 mark for a 6-4 Louisville lead.Â
Boston College's Caroline Margolis scored the first goal of the half at the 13:49 mark to cut the Louisville lead to one. Then with 4:56 left, the Eagles scored again to tie the game. The Cardinals won the draw control but then turned the ball over, giving Boston College possession. The Eagles ran down the clock to the final minute looking to score.Â
Read made the save on the Eagles' shot with 34 seconds remaining, despite being a man down. McNamara caused a turnover in the final seconds and the game went into overtime.Â
Louisville won the draw control in overtime for a chance to score first. Boston College was called for two yellow cards and the Cardinals tried to take advantage. With nine seconds remaining in first three minutes of overtime, Koloski was awarded a free position shot and found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
Louisville finished the game with a 21-19 shot advantage and an 11-4 advantage in draw controls. Ochoa finished with 13 saves while Read finished with seven.Â
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, March 3 as the host No. 5 Northwestern at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium at 1:00 p.m.Â
